US cannot account for 190,000 guns in Iraq: report

Posted Wed Aug 1, 2007 8:00pm AEST

According to an investigation carried out by the US Government Accountability Office (GOA), the US cannot account for 190,000 weapons issued to Iraqi security forces in 2004 and 2005.

According to the July 31 report, the military "cannot fully account for about 110,000 AK-47 assault rifles, 80,000 pistols, 135,000 items of body armour and 115,000 helmets reported as issued to Iraqi forces."

The weapons disappeared from records between June 2004 and September 2005, as the military struggled to rebuild the disbanded Iraqi forces from scratch amid mounting attacks from Sunni insurgents and Shiite militias.

US commanders often accuse foreign powers, such as Iran, of supplying arms to illegal militias fighting in Iraq, but the report shows they cannot fully account for the hundreds thousands of weapons they brought in themselves.

Last month, Turkey raised concerns over reports that separatist Kurdish guerrillas launching cross-border raids from northern Iraq had received US-supplied guns supposedly destined for Iraqi security forces.

So that's why the Iraqis were trying to buy 40million in blackmarket arms behind our backs, they just didn't want to fess up on being so short of gats!

So in other words U.S weapons are in the hands of terrorists. Therefore, the U.S is arming terrorists.

That is how the U.S applies their thinking when other nation's weapons end up in the hands of terrorists.

I do not recall Iran announcing that they've "lost" an unknown number of EFP's and sniper rifles... let me know when that happens.

who said anything about lost?

Syria has stockpiles in the millions of Iranian weapons as well as Hezbollah. These weapons include the latest Iranian weapons including sniper rifles which Iran has mass produced and given to Syria.

Iran has 70 million people.
More than the populations of Syria, Lebanon and Saudi Arabia.

Insurgents 99.9% off them are coming from the Arab world. Top three nations they are coming from? Saudi Arabia, Syria and Lebanon.

Hmm....

I note that this follows or precedes an report that the Italians uncovered a plot to import another million or so guns into the Iraqi theater. But all these weapons still fall into the category of light weapons with limited range. While tanks and artillery batteries are the real deal for military credibility and count as heavy weapons. And heavy weapons are the real deal that puts the efficiency into the process of mass murder.

Given that there are at least three sides to the Iraqi insurgencies, its somewhat the lack of heavy weapons that keep the lid on. And it sure won't be pretty folk if any one side gets a hold of heavy weapons in significant numbers.

Ouch you kind of nailed it. Remove US and insert Iran and you'd have some folks here foaming at the mouth for military action.

The other thing to understand is that Uncle Sam would never arm terrorists. We only arm freedom fighters. Its those other nations that arm terrorists.

Just for the record, I have never called for war with Iran, nor do I believe that it is necessary. I simply want them to stop doing a few nefarious things, including their armament of shi'ite militias and anti-Karzai forces in Afghanistan, funding hezbollah, and delving into nuclear weapons research... just to name a few.

So please don't pull a Lemon Law and put words in my mouth. kkthx.
