US -> Canada shipping expensive computer parts question!

StageLeft

No Lifer
My brother is needing a big upgrade and the prices down here are way way cheaper. My intentions were to buy a bunch of gear from newegg and send to him. It will cost in the area of $550 US. Now, if I rightfully declare this all at the border (I'm getting a courier service so that it can be properly tracked) how much customs is he going to have to pay on $550 US ($800 CAN) worth of computer equipment? if I was a bad, evil person I'd just call it a gift and put its worth low but on the off chance it's lost I don't want to then come back saying it was worth $550 US and not the $40 I declared it as 🙂

I can tell you you will be paying probably $35 brokers fee for processing the items & probably the the PST & GST. Computer components are duty free I think (under nafta).

Cheers,
Aquaman

so he's looking at 15% on the $800 plus a $35 broker's fee?!

ok, skoorb. heres how it breaks down.

they WILL pay $35 in brokerage fees, IF the package is sent thru standard surface channels, plus the taxes.

i use UPS, and heres what i tell my canadian customers. $35 or $50 (standard or express). they always take the $35, and they get hit again with $35 on the brokerage.

with the $50, the brokerage fees are included, and they get it several days earlier, since the brokerage fees are paid up front and they can advance the paperwork thru customs.

so, essentially instead of paying me $50, they pay $75 and wait 2-3 days longer.

BTW, nafta only kicks in on US manufactured items. if the stuff you send is made in taiwan, then taxes begin to kick in. you may need to fill out a NAFTA cerificate of origin if the value of goods is over $1600 CAD

<< whatever you do, don't ever use UPS

perhaps this thread might help you...

Thanks i'll read that. Also I'm not going to use UPS. One of the shipments of books I got from amazon to Canada simply never showed up. I know amazon shipped it but UPS somehow lost it. Very annoying.

About brokerage do they kick in at a certain price point? If I send a gift worth $40 vs a gift worth $90 vs $200, etc? I AM going to declare it as a gift...but I'd like to keep the dollar value in the proper range.

thanks PsychoAndy this is just the info I needed.. the stuff I want to buy from the U.S. only use UPS because of fraud protection in other words they want a signature which USPS does not do.
