I been thinking of joining up, but haven't talked to a recruiter yet. Any one know what the physical requirements are for enlisting?

I looked at the website, they don't say anything but contact a recruiter, and since its going on 7:15 pm where I live, its too late.

Trust me, you don't have to be in shape to enlist. However, your basic training will be much easier if you are in good shape. Just be able to run a mile or so and do pushups 24/7 and you'll be set. They can really do a lot for you in 6 weeks.

I'm in the Army's delayed entry program and my recruiter and I set up a website describing the process of enlisting in the Army. It provides the enlistment standards and lots more. You can check it out at Dubuque Army Info

All you have to do is go to the library and fill out card for selective service. Assuming you have a high school diploma all 4 branches will be calling you day and night telling you how great it would be to join their branch of service and how much better they are than the Army. It's the job of the recruiter to convince you that their branch of service is the best one to get into. They'll promise you the world and do all the song and dance to have you sign on the dotted line. And of course you have to take some tests to see what you place among the recruits that are signing up. Try to act surprised when after taking one of these tests that you scored the highest in the area.
Now I'm kind of curious why in the world would you want to join the Army? Are you that patriotic or do you like the Movie Black Hawk Down? If I were you, I'd go to college and get a degree. There's no reason for you to join at this point. But that decision is totally up to you. I'd do a little more homework first and talk to people who's been in. They'll give you some sound advice. Don't believe what the recruiters tell you. Let me stress this again "It's their job to lie!!!"

Just make sure you think it over real well before you sign that paper, because once you do theres no turning back.

You obviously don't know much about the Army or the other services. If you score well enough in the ASVAB, you can get some very nice computer related jobs. I'm an Information Systems Operator, and you know what? I get tons of experience in networking and programming, and the Army pays for virtually everything. I won't be working at a fast food chain during or after college to pay off my bills....the IT industry is slow right now, and they want guys with experience. The Army will even help you earn certificates such as the ones offered by Cisco, etc.

Next time you want to seem smart to a forum full of people, stay silent. You obviously know nothing about the armed services. They dont call you day and night nor do they harass you in any way. If you state you dont want to be contacted, they will leave you be.

Had a friend who signed up

Was guaranteed Hawii, or California. He got Korea. Actually he met his wife there and did two tours, so it worked out well. Just saying beware.

Also, while I encourage you to pursue this, make sure you understand why you are joining. Just for kicks is the wrong reason.

The only person that can give you guarantees are the counselors at the military entrance processing station. They are the ones who make the contracts. Glad it turned out okay for him, but he probably should have done some more research on the Army so he knew that. That's partly why my recruiter and I set up that website I mentioned above....so people can have quick access to the stuff they should probably know before signing on the dotted line.

I haven't bashed the Army or any of the other branches. And granted I don't know didly squat about the Army. I have friends and co-workers that got out of the Army and I have the utmost respect for them. Now as for me not knowing much about the other services, I was in the Navy back during the Persian Gulf war on an aircraft carrier. Luckily I scored high enough on my ASVAB where I didn't have to work as a mess crank and swab the decks for 3 years. Since I've been out of the Nav I haven't had any problems finding a job because of my job experience. I'm not telling the guy not to join. I did say that is totally up to him.
Anyways, can you guarentee this guy that wants to join the Army that he'll be as fortunate as you or me? I knew a lot of guys on the ship that wanted to kill their recruiter because they were told what they wanted to hear and didn't get all the facts straight. Maybe you can start a new thread and talk about all the positives of joining the Army?

I've heard of the occasional bad recruiter, but there are plenty of resources online where you can get the facts and nothing but the facts.

Since you're still in the Delayed Entry Program, that means you haven't been in the Army. For a minute there I thought I was talking to a Veteran who got out and is working in some high paying job in the IT industry. Oh well, doesn't matter good luck when you get in. Don't be pissed at me when you don't have time to earn all the college credit and classes that the recruiter promised you. I was told that I could earn a college degree when I was in. But I was too busy just doing the job I was assigned and didn't have time to earn those college credits.

Well, I did do what you suggested. I went to college, and then joined the Army. I found out that was a stupid mistake for two reasons:

1. If I had joined the Army first, I would have gotten all the GI bill money.
2. If I had joined the Army first, I would have had the discipline to be a better student and know better how to set goals and standards and then attain them.

Don't listen to Ying Yang, I don't think he knows much about the military first hand. Listen to the guys that have been there, done that.

Edit: Get any special promises from a recruiter or counselor in writing!!!!
