US Army Free Game CD

That's right children. The United States Army has created its own 3d FPS games.

Go to Americasarmy.com and register to get a FREE CD of two of the Official US Army's games. No shipping and handling charges.

Now, you right wingers can scream about wasting tax payer money.

Muhahaha.

The game actually looks pretty good. Just hope that if I sign up for it, they don't call me to join the army :frown:

Yeah I read about this in the paper today too.

So why would this make people join the army if other fps haven't? They are going to flash subliminal messages or something? 😉

I'm sure it's just a way to get email/physical addresses to send recruitment crap.

*Edit -- at the bottom of the registration screen:

You must be 13-34 years old and complete all the information requested to receive your free CD. Other conditions may apply. Available while supplies last. Limit one per person.

If that's not for recruitment, I don't know what else it could be for. Still could be a fun game 🙂

this is definetly for recruitment, the cost to make and send a cd far exceeds the costs it takes for a hundred ppl to dowload the game directly. it'd only costs fractions of a cent each download vs mailing a cd, and postage rates are going up too. doubt it can beat rtcw...

It is (obviously) a recruiting gimic. However, it's also kinda stupid considering only about 1% of the armed forces are actually special ops... (SEALs, Rangers, Delta Force, etc.)

stupid yahoo wants you to log in to read the full article, here's what it reads, preview:

"On Wednesday, the Army introduced a simulated, multiplayer video game designed for play over the Internet, or over personal computers, that gives the gaming world a taste of what it's like to defend oil pipelines and airfields from terrorist attacks.

They also can do the mundane, like cook or guard the barracks...."

WOAH! super-awesome cooking action!!! i gotta get this game... since its multiplayer, im sure they'd allow it to be downloaded eventually. however, methinks the government really just wants to get into all your computers to spy on u, remember the CIA's carnivore?

The Army, a EULA, and the age of the digital signature.

What do these three have in common?

You, a 4 year hitch, and peeling potatoes. 😛

Well if you don't want to give out your personal info, then I'm sure the game will appear at your friendly neighbourhood peer-to-peer server. Its free anyway, so I would think its ok to download it if you wanted it.

I've heard that the game itself is excellent but that you have to spend months peeling digital potatoes before you can play it. 😉

XFreebie, it would probably cost the same, if not more, for people to download it. Contrary to popular belief, bandwidth is expensive, not free. A ~600MB distribution would not only take a long time to download (even on broadband), but it would mean that everyone with dialup would be left out.

Yeah, you get the game, play it online (while the Army monitors your progress) and if you're realy good you get "recruited", meaning they come to your home and drag you to some third world country to take out a warlord or dictator or something.

Kinda like "The Last Starfighter". 😀

So if it's realistic, does that mean if you get killed on an operation, your game experience ends forever and your family gets sent a notice of your death? What if you just get shot--do you have months of time off from the game while you rehab? 😕

the premise is pretty smart.

if you like to blow up poop and kill people, shoot things, then well, maybe you should join the army and do it for real, kill some taliban. I'm sure its a much bigger rush being in the "REAL THING".
