US Armed Forces switch from humvees to minivans

the military is actually getting very lean and toned, for a government agency. rummy has had to scrounge around for a lot recently.

edit: although they should buy beater toyota pickups so the terrorists don't know they're coming

Good to see more focus on efficiency but I hope it's not at the expense of lives or injuries. I'm sure there hasn't been any cutting of waste from Halliburton's budget.

WINDSOR, Canada ? The U.S. Armed Forces have ordered 19,000 minivans and 5,000 Pacificas from the Chrysler Group for use as light-duty vehicles in Iraq and elsewhere around the world, displacing less fuel-efficient Humvees, according to the Windsor Star.

The switch to the gas-powered school-carpool mainstays is designed to reduce fuel consumption and improve passenger-carrying ability. The U.S. military has complained it is inefficient to use Humvees to carry a few soldiers at a time, especially in noncombat situations.

The minivans ? all gold-colored ? will be built at Chrysler's St. Louis, Missouri, and Windsor assembly plants.

"The U.S. government has put their down payment on the vehicles and we're building them already," a plant source told the Star. "They're supposed to be going to Iraq as taxis and stuff."

What this means to you: The minivan: Soccer-mom tested, U.S. Army approved. Nice to see the government is actually looking to save taxpayers some cash.

considering how poorly they've been doing with recruiting, I'm sure the people in charge wouldn't have made this decision if it meant more soldiers would die. You can always buy more gas, but it's getting harder and harder, not to mention more expensive, to buy more people.

Sure is now if they can get rid of the deadwood in congress................................

Wow, the minivans sound like such a great battle vehicle. I'm sure they can withstand tons of machinegun fire, RPGs, bombs, etc. (sarcasm)

Sorry but that is really, really, stupid.

and so they don't break down.

i love that Top Gear segment where they show what terrorists all over the world have been using to fight off major Western armies: beat up Toyota pickups.

Hmmmm....I think the non-combat vehicles will run on unleaded, right? Won't the US Govt be losing money on buying unleaded fuel, because I believe the Humvee runs on diesel/any other oil derived fuel?

Humvees can't survive bonbs and rpg's either. The most standard armor will stop is a .223 round.

Yeah...but considering the HMMWV gets around 12 mpg, you're not really trading one gallon of diesel for one gallon of unleaded
