Glad everyone made it out ok, that could have ended VERY bad.

NEW YORK - A US Airways plane crashed into the Hudson River on Thursday afternoon after striking a bird that disabled two engines, sending passengers fleeing for safety in the frigid waters, a government official said.

....

Government officials did not believe the crash is related to terrorism.

Well no ****ing ****. Come on people, do you really need to try and make a reference to terrorism every god damn time something happens to a plane?

I think we should immediately round up all birds for questioning in this incident! ;)

No, any terrorism questions are valid and its, in that sense, a relief to see its probably not terrorism. And yes, kudos to the pilot who choose his safest alternative, but hypothermia is now a huge danger to any survivors soaked to the skin. I do not have any time temperature charts of survival time handy, but 40 degree water is close to as cold as it gets. Many may die of hypothermia if they do not get them into boats, and warm them up very quick.

Sad, very sad,

You can see some passengers standing on the plane as its slowly sinking!!

Wow, you should really take lessons. It's a survival thing, why die needlessly?

Anyways, kudos to the pilots, that's a pretty amazing thing.

Not something I would ever want to experience, I hate flying enough as it is.

I can see it now: A bird comes up to a plane and says hello. Plane responds with something to the effect of "your mom" to which the bird goes berserk and hits the plane's engines. Plane is like "No, FU!" and assaults the bird head-on.

Now thats quality entertainment! :p

Yes, but its a bit different when you hit more than 1 and its both engines involved. Something that big will still break the fins in the turbine, especially several entering at once. Their lucky none of the fins broke off and went into the fuselage.

Also as I read on the BBC from a retired Delta pilot: "They literally just choke out the engine and it quits," Mr Mazzone said.

So basically I suspect the pilot had no time to get any of the engines back online. He was only a couple hundred feet in the air and had the choice of either landing or continuing to try and restart the engines.

Whatever happened that pilot did an awesome job!

Yes, they are rated for bird strikes, but sometimes, well...shit happens.

Bird strikes are no joke. They will destroy a turbine engine pretty damn quick as some have shown with the thompson 757 footage. If they flew through a flock of them they could easily take out both engines.

If you can kill two birds with one stone, then why can't one bird kill two engines?

:p

Seriously though, the pilot deserves a nice fat bonus check for this landing.
