That was all I could find. It said they *may* file for bankruptcy in order to restructure.

*edit* Looks like you were right. :)

w00t!!! GET THE F*CK OUTTA CHARLOTTE YOU THIEVING BAHSTADS!!!

I really hope this brings an end to the $700 restricted economy flights between CLT and NYC. Or all their other overpriced fares. Wow, so much good can come out of this...

YAY!!! We might actually get some international service rather than having USAirways force every Charlottean through Philadelphia! British Airways might expand their flight schedule as they had initially promised before USAirways priced them out of Charlotte (then raised prices once they'd left!)

OTOH, I hope the economy/stock market doesn't tank after this announcement--and I REALLY hope there are no accounting scandals at USAirways.

Oh yea, almost forgot!!! No more driving to Greensboro or Raleigh just to get a flight I can afford (a flight that no doubt connects back in Charlotte where I would have paid at least double to sit on the same plane.)

Gee, my next USAir flight is in...three hours. I doubt they'll be handing out any extra pretzels.

I doubt that would be the case. Actually, the airlines only operate with a few days worth of cash. Any small "blip" can put them over the edge. I suspect that US Air saw this coming some time ago - maybe, two years or more. A few years back, they were going to sell out to Robert Johnson (he started BET), but that deal never materialized. However, being a Nothern-Virginian myself, this kind of stinks because quite a few companies in our area have tanked - I was getting used to those yearly 20% gains on my house value, but stuff like this kind of puts a damper on the real estate market.

Get some extra capital. Time to buy some cheap airplanes
Actually, I wonder how many airplanes US Air actually owns? They could lease more than they own.

Actually, the only airline worth a damn (both in the monetary as well as in the sense of as a consumer) is Southwest Airlines. Southwest is likely the only airline with the scratch to buy those surplus planes, but wouldn't because they only fly Boeing 737s, whereas i'm sure that U.S. Airways has mostly widebodies like the 747 and Airbus 4xx series planes.

US Airways also operates quite a few local routes with some turboprops , especially to those to the middle of nowhere around its hubs. I've flown a few of these and if US Airways tanks, getting to some of those places will be much, much harder. :(

Actually they have WAY more narrow bodies than widebodies, including a buttload of 737s, but no 747s. And all of Airbus' aircraft are A3xx not 4xx...that doesn't even exist.
