In future warfare jets may as well be as practical as a tank is now. Primary reason for making them at this point is to keep the contractors happy.

All it said was no new fighters, they're trying to get the 35 up and sending out request for feasibility to make more 22s. In non-fighters, they are looking for a new bomber and replacement for the A-10 now that they've finally admitted the 35 won't be able to do its job as well.

Just take the basic idea of the A-10 build a new airframe which incorporates the MFBFC, titanium tub, redundant control actuators, easily replaceable engines.

Added capability should be onboard state of the art avionics, a larger payload capability and perhaps make it a bit faster.

We need orbital bombardment... from orbit. Always from orbit.

Well, tanks are still handy for that rare occasion when you need to officially invade someplace instead of just sending in peacekeepers, trainers, and support. Plus they look scary, a really nice IFV with a 37mm may be way more effective (and cost effective) in the places we are actually fighting, but it doesn't look scary, and it could potentially lose a fight if an old Soviet tank shows up.

The article is a complete non-surprise though, for reasons lupi already covered. Our previous generation of fighters aren't even obsolete and we already have another generation that we're trying to make work, we're really fine on fighter airframes for a while.

Defense contractor welfare these days. Throw open a shipping container racked with missiles/drones and it's going to be a bad day for those 100+ million dollar manned assets in the air. Oh you have flares or point defense, how quaint. 50 missiles launch...

Now we need to incorporate more deep learning AI algorithms into military hardware...

Really, how are you even going to find the "$100 million dollar manned asset"?

I've heard that Raptors fly into contested airspace with relative impunity, and the F-35 has a lower RCS than the F-22. Go ahead, shoot 50 missiles at it, you still need one of them to hit.

Edit: lol, David Axe.

As long as they are not big enough to be considered weapons of mass destruction since that's banned by the 1967 Outer Space Treaty.

Nothing new here.
PCA = "Fighter" that can do a lot of fancy pants crap.
The 6th Gen Fighter will be classified as a "Penetrating Counterair" platform.

Basically, what they are doing is telling congress that "Your bullshit talking points are obsolete...this isn't WWII\VietName\Gulf War anymore."

F-22 and B-2 are decades old designs and they still can't be touched.
F-35 takes lessons learned from them and adds EW, Network centric crap and all sorts of fun stuff.

6th gen fighters are going to be REALLY interesting. Gonna be interesting to see how the Navy does their version.

I've been saying for years there will be more drones in the future.

So much nope, the F-35 is still a defense contractor welfare fund.

They'll be flying some I'm sure in the future I'm sure, with drone control, as so much cash has been dumped there I imagine.

Who can explain to this noob why the Navy has fighter jets? Because they are stuck on a ship in an ocean? Then why don't they collaborate with the Air Force with joint operations? The military is just so complex to me.

Air Force and Navy collaborate.
Air Force - Fixed bases.
Navy - Flexible placement of airbases. It's why we have the ability to project power vs China or Russia who are dainty little regional powers.
