Urgent!!! Will a Hewlett Packard System Restore disk qualify for WinXP Pro upgrade?

My parents just bought the upgrade version of WinXP Pro. They have a HP computer that came installed with WinME. They only have the system RESTORE disks (the kind that have a copy of the OS and all the wonderful little proggies that came with it). Not an actual OEM copy of the windows software like you get at newegg.

I'm worried that the HP software restore disks are so proprietary that the WinXP Pro upgrade will not recognize it as a prior copy of windows and will not load. The computer (software wise) is so screwed they will have to do a clean install.

So the question is... Will the system restore disks qualify for the upgrade version of WinXP???

Many thanks,

Restore disks usually do not work.

What I would do is just do the system restore with WinMe to get the system operating properly then do the upgrade.

From my experience using MS upgrade products in the past, they will prompt you to insert an earlier version CD, but will simply whine a little bit if you don't. Basically, you can install an upgrade product without any other CD, you will just have to click "Yes" to say that you understand it is illegal to install if you do not own the earlier product.

Yes, CZroe, I've heard that too. I've also heard that you can point it back to the disc you are trying to install and it will count it as a qualifier.

You won't have any problems, I had one of those disposible systems before and have done upgrades. If you think about it microsoft wants to sell software so it wouldn't make sense to not allow the upgrade.
Good luck and post results.

MAKE SENSE< SINCE WHEN DID THEY MAKE SENSE>🙂
