Hi all,

I just did a virus scan and found a virus called ripper in both mbr of C: and D: but McFee refused to clean it. Any help would be much appreciated!!

Please.

But I don't have a clean boot disk. :(

Will rebooting from harddisk do any harm to me?

Just follow the directions from the Macaffee site, do exactly as it instructs, you should be fine.

Do you have access to another comp? Did you make or have the Macafee emergency disk?

No and no. :(
What is the worst thing that can happen to a infected computer?

The ripper is a oldy but goody. I had a friend who was infected with it. He reinstalled his OS 3 times before figuring out he had to recreate his MBR. Also, I believe he had to do a low level format of the HD. I can't imagine someone not having a boot disk. You may want to check and see if one came with your PC. Seems like you could get to a library, or a friends PC, to create a boot floppy, if you can't find one.

Do you not have a floppy drive? If you do you can download a boot disc from a few places on the net, just do a search.

If you still need to know how to remove it go to www.sarc.com and search for the virus and they should tell you how to remove it.

If you need to clear the MBR just go into DOS and in the C:\ prompt type "fdisk /mbr" without the quotes. That will create a new MBR for you. If the virus damages files files that you will need to reinstall windows to fix the files or you might try to do a "System File Checker" in the system information program in system tools.

That's what I am thinking to do. But the instruction on Symantec web page says that re-write the mbr is not enough. Is that true or false.?
