URGENT P4 HS/F quesion

Is the retail HSF supposed to be tightly clamped down like the old P3's are can it move around once it is installed... It seems to not be on tightly right now..

yeah my P4 retail heatsink is quite tight...took a fair amount of force (more than i expected) to push those levers down, and that clamped it in real good.

can you lift the HSF up a little bit still away from the processor... cuz i dont think its supposed to do that but i can..

no i can't...it's on there tight up against the core of the CPU and doesn't pull away.

hmm okay.. are you using the stock one ?

yeah, i'm using the stock intel heatsink&fan that came with my P4 1.5 s478 on my ASUS P4B266-C

by the way...are you using a socket 423 or 478 P4? i believe the heatsinks are different for the two.

its a 478 and im using the same mobo..dammit i dont know whats wrong!

the levers are all the way down too... but its jes not really secure..

i'm pretty sure the heatsink can go in only one way...take a look here for how mine's attached (the white arms you have to push either left or right in order to lock the heatsink in place...the top one started on the right and i pushed it left, and the bottom one started on the left and i pushed it right)

you might have to completely remove the heatsink and try again

okay imma try again.. thank you so much for your help.. im pretty sure i locked it though cuz if i pick up the mobo by the hsf everything lifts up (not that i did it) but it jes didnt seem to be on real tight like my old p3... which is wierd

I think I remember seeing a picture once of what a properly installed P4 HSF should look like. It caused a slight bow to the mobo. I don't use a P4 so I can't confirm that. Can someone else?

I installed a P4 last week. I know what you mean. I can move the hsf. Check to make sure the clip and hook up properly.
