URGENT - new mobo installation w/ NTFS

I've just installed a new motherboard (old one broke), and WinXP will not boot (it hangs upon trying to load the amd agp driver; the new mobo has via chipset). It's on a NTFS partition, which I can't access from DOS. So basically, I don't know how to reinstall the OS. Does anybody? I don't want to wipe the HD, but wiping the NTFS partition is an option.

If its just a OS problem then why don't you just put the CD in and reinstall it?!?!?!? You do it the same way you first did it...

After booting on the CD, select don't repair and full format on FAT32 if you don't want NTFS...

But if it's a hardware problem, reinstalling won't probably solve your problem...

i hate these random problems too!

well, my suggestion would be to try XP again, if it still hangs, try using win2k.

if win2k works, perhaps your xp media isnt working, or just something is fishy with the driver configuration of the mobo with the xp install... you can then just try to upgrade to XP if you want it.

if win2k doesnt work, then at least you know there is a better chance that it is a hardware problem...

this is all assuming that u want to use NTFS. i dont imagine changing the file system would cause the OS not to install, but i could be wrong.

in any case. i hate these random problems! but at least they build skillzzz... hahaha 😉

good luck 😉

The only really good way to solve the problem is a drive flush and re-install.
The OS is expecting certain motherboard drivers and is presented with a totally different board.
I just tried doing the same thing with my Mother's POS Compaq. I tried using the drive out of that machine still loaded with 98 from Compaq on the machine I built to replace it.
She wanted to try and save all her mail addy's.
98 pitched a fit when presented with a new mobo and processor.
It sucks, I know, but you'll be happier in the long run flushing the drive and starting over.

See here for info on helping Windows survive a Mobo upgrade, but you will prolly need to reinstall Windows, and to do so, you should be able to insert the XP CD and then boot from it and that will take you into Setup. Good luck!!!
