Hi, I have been trying to fix my friend's computer for over a month and I can't figure out what is causing the instability with the sytem. Here is the spec of the computer:
motherboard: MSI KT3 Ultra
CPU: Athlon XP 2000+ (Palomino) @ default voltage (1.75v) @ 12.5x133Mhz
RAM: one stick of 512MB DDR PC2700
Video: GeForce4 4200 64MB AGP
Sound: Onboard sound
HD: WD 80G 7200RPM
DVD: LiteOn DVD-ROM
OS: WinXP Pro
The computer starts up fine and gets into Windows normally, but when it trys to run any games like NBA Live 2005, LOR - battle of the middle earth, or even loading the Knoppix Linux off of the DVD-ROM only that everything seems to be loading normal, then all of a sudden, the monitor will go blank and the light on the monitor is flashing green, but I have no video, but the hd, cpu fans and stuff inside the computer are still running or at least it seems like they are still on. Also, the computer wouldn't respond to the power switch either, I have to pull the plug off the power supply to shut it off.
Now, here is what I have tried so far to determine the cause of problem.
1.) I have switched out the motherboard to an Asus (still does the same thing)
2.) I have switched the graphic card to an ATI 9600 with 128MB RAM (still does the same thing)
3.) I have tried moving the memory to a different slots (no help either)
The only thing that seems to be stable is that when I switch out the graphic card and put in an older Nvidia GeFore2 and Riva128 into the system and boot up. It seems to be stable, like I can load the Knoppix Linux with no problem, but obviously I can't really play any of the games, so I can't tell. But it just seems wierd tho, because even I put in a ATI 9600 graphic card, it would still have the same problem.
So, I am really running out of idea on what is wrong with the computer and I don't have any spare CPU or Power Supply laying around, so I can't switch them out to test.
If anyone can give me some idea on what might be wrong or some software that I can use to test the computer, I would highly appreciate the help. Thanks.
