You know you spend too much time on forums when you recognize forum software by URL formatting.

i read that as " steal him a Dell or Gateway.." , that would be more profitable :D

The cost of the parts from NewEgg is $540.00 incluiding shipping.

Here is the actual shopping cart. Any suggestions are welcome:

If everything goes well and all the components are good I calculate to spend 3 or 4 days in putting it all together: hardware/software.

My problem is that I have done this many times for family members at no charge.... but in this case is for a neighbour and there are also other people to come in the near future.

How much can I charge for my services?

charge him nothing for building it. charge him $50 per hour for any service calls.

Give him a flat cost of $700.00.

However, enjoy being 24x7 tech support for the rest of your neighbors life.

^^^

don't post here complaining " my neighbor keeps getting viruses/spyware from porno sites and since i built the pc for him, he wants me to fix it everytime he breaks it"

I hate that! You do one nice thing for a friend or relative, and they turn you into their private tech support bitch.

3-4 days? What are you doing to it that would take even REMOTELY that long?

I have to agree with the rest of the people here when they say enjoy being 24x7 tech support forever.
If you are really doing this, and you plan on doing for others, you have to come up with a some sort of standard rate... you cant charge one perosn $50/hr and the other $100.

Lets see.... 3-4 days... at even 5 hrs/day... damn you got some $ coming.

Taking in consideration that I'll do it in my spare time, I'll be installing WinXP Pro with all the updates, Office Suite, games, AV, Firewall and many other things.

Last system I put together I had to flash the bios and and look for info on MB jumpers to be able to get the processor recognized and be able to install the OS after trying several times. The "client" (friend and neighbour) brought the parts himself....and this is what I got from him:
15 blank cd's, a pair of christmas gift personalized pens (with his name on them), 2 new IDE cables, a box of old antistatic cleaning wipes for monitors and half a box of floppy discs. LOL

Here is the shopping cart again. I hope it works now. Any suggestions on the hardware are welcome.

haha i know...

he says he has to install updates and office, blah blah blah...what a crock!

what you dont understand is that even doing it in your spare time, it should not take that long. you can push like 3 keys and walk away for 10 minutes. then, you can come back for 5 seconds, push some more keys, and walk away again for another 10 minutes. the only time you really have to sit there is when you are building it lol...

anyways, have a nice time wasting half a week building a computer ;) good luck

I usually charge this or 150. But I stopped doing this since I became 24X7 free tech support. You really don't make anything if you do this. :p

I guess I can take as long as I want...and I don't need any of your foolish remarks and name calling.

Don't do it!

Biggest mistake I ever made was selling a computer to a friend of a friend. He'll nag you every time he breaks it.

I agree with you doing it as a favor. Maybe exchange for dinner or something. Just make it clear that you can only help him with tech support so much.

Build for free, charge $10 per service visit, plus $20-30/hr for any real problems.
