I have an aging 9800 pro, I need to upgrade to a pci express card. What card from nvidia or ati will present the best price versus performance? I am doing 3d gaming, and modelling.
Thanks,
Jarrett

As stated above, 1800XT or 7900GT whichever is cheaper.

x1800xt will be better for upcoming DX9 games.

However, if you are good with your hands, you can get a 7900 GT and volt mod it...

There was a comparison somewhere of it and the X1800XT, the verdict was that it's not all that great. I wouldnt' bother waiting, just grab the 7900GT or X1800XT depending on price.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814102698 X1800XT Retail 256MB $279
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814102629 X1800XT 512MB ome $299 or $309 for retail

Why ATI X1800XT :? AVIVO , HDR with AA , Better Performance in High res with AA , plays oblivion well

Why Should you not buy ATI X1800XT : Power & Nosie at boot up.

Or you can wait for x1900GTO which should be really fast : )

Only reason i would recommend NVIDIA 7900GT if you wanted a Cool , Quiet , less power consuming graphic card and also if you wanted to Volt mod it which i don't recommend.

Make sure before you pair a nice graphics card like X1800XT series you have A64 3000+ or P4 3.0ghz and 1 gig of ram.

yeah nother vote for 7900gt or x1800xt. i have both and i would say i like my 7900gt better. not because there is a huge performance difference between the , but mainly because he 7900gt feels like an underdog and once i voltmodded it it became a giant :) u wont be dissapointd with either one though so do what ya want to. the x1800xt is gonna scale better wih resolution and heavy eye candy cuz of is 512 RAM and it can also do HDR + AA which is nice (though not muh better than bloom IMO) the 7900gt has much more raw pixel processing power (24 pixel pipes vs the 16 in the x1800xt) which may or may not make a difference in future games, really depends on if they keep pushing out games that take advantage of nvidia's raw horsepower or ATI's unified shader tech (being that nvidia is moving to unified shader tech next gen i wouldnt be surprised if games got really shader heavy, in which case th x1800/x1900 are gonna be much better than the current nvivida offerings) anyways hope this helps a little

In all fairness, the X1k cards are pretty noisy all the time except when doing 2D. During gaming the fan speeds up, but it isn't ever as loud as during boot up. That being said, the 7900GT isn't that quiet either.

Quiet? That depends on what you call quiet. Guru3d shows it at 50db, just like they show the XT at 50db.

am not usre if the "loveati" coupon still works but if it does then at $250 the X1800XT is a no brainer.

From what I read, the Sapphire warranty only covers retail products. So it's well worth the extra $9.

According to the thread in the deals section, it ends today. So there is still some time left to use it. Newegg is PST.

HOLY SHIZ. That is a great deal.
If I were buying a card today that is what I would get. However I won't be in the market till August when the G80 comes out. Which means probably no good deals or free games.
