System: Athlon 1400, Abit KT7 raid, 512mb Cas2 2x256, GeForce2 Ultra, 2xWD 80 8mb, 1xIBM 45, WXP Pro SP 1 and latest updates, DVD, CD-RW, USB printer, scanner, keyboard, MX-700.
I keep getting this Stop code when I try to boot into Windows normally.
I can get to the desktop for a few seconds and then it BSDs.
Code: Stop 0x0000008E
(0xC0000005
0x804ECA2
::this part changes every time, examples are::
0xB67A4B88
0xB6A6BB88
0xB3759B88
0xF61BBB88
ends with
0x000000)
I looked it up and 0x08 codes refer to bad RAM.
I changed out all of the sticks with a known good stick and in different slots? no luck.
I've Flashed my Bios to the latest greatest and updated the video driver to the newest det 44.03.
Symptoms:
Computer boots fine to the desktop and then after a few seconds BSDs.
Computer will boot to Safe Mode, no problem.
Except that I have to set the BIOS so that the USB runs off of the BIOS and not the OS.
If I set it to the OS I can?t F8 to the safe mode menu.
History:
About a week ago my DVD player died? no biggie, found a bargain at Best Buy.
Hadn?t installed it yet.
Installed it after the troubles started because I saw something in an MS notice about a hotfix for SP1 where Firewire drives weren?t disconnecting properly.
Figured the DVD dying messed with the OS somehow, but no luck.
The OS recognized and installed the DVD no problem.
2 days ago I wake up to my computer telling me I have a virus.
IRC.Trojan.stl, or some such, which added the file Kernel32.exe to my System32 folder.
Don?t have IRC, but I do DL from Kazaa often. Figures.
AVG couldn?t delete it so booted to safe mode and then the troubles began.
Managed to get the file deleted but couldn?t get back into Windows properly.
Get to the desktop and BSD.
It was here that I swapped the GeForce2 Ultra with a GeForce3 thinking this one was fried too(a ?factory refurb? card from an RMA)
I checked the Symantec website for help and looked at the registry settings it suggested but found nothing.
I?d backed up the registry before I checked the settings, but that copy probably has any negative changes in it.
Windows has suspended the restore function? says I don?t have enough space, but I clearly do.
I?ve added nothing new to the system since I picked up the Logitec MX700 mouse a few months ago and except for some burps from it, USB related, everything has been running smoothly.
I?d appreciate any input or suggestions as my next step is to reinstall Windows.
Thanks,
Brett
