So what? There was a time not that long ago when a 14yo was getting married. In fact, it still happens in other parts of the world.

There was a time when slavery was ok in the US and still goes on around the world, should we be ok if someone does that here?

The old " it was done before and still happens in..." is a copout.

I'll admit I had sex when I was 15, but I was with her until the end of HS. I doubt many kids fit that standard today. And the whole abstinence thing works about as well as telling kids not to smoke, it only makes them want to try it even more. But as long as right-wing christians and republicans rule it will only stay the same.

Let me rephrase what I meant:

If this has been happening in America (and all over the world) since the beginning of recorded history and the world hasn't fallen apart (in fact, living conditions have greatly improved) then why make such a big fuss about it now?

Im not to sure how right wing christians and republicans are at fault for this one. Hell I'd think they'd be LESS likely to be blamed. Christians (generally) are against pre marital sex. Republicans are typically conservative, meaning they don't go out bumping and grinding all night, exploring their sexuality. But when you break it all down, humans are humans. Ive got a penis and I intend to use it. What needs to be done is making sure the kids are smart enough to use protection and not sleep around with a ton of people.

Again, how the fvck is this Christians/Republicans fault?

Dude where have you been? You can't blame this on one sect or the other, I agree with you on that but, in my experience, it always seemed the girls raised in any strict religious environment were the freakiest. The whole "I'm saving myself for marriage" lasted about as long as it took for them to get out of sight of church!

Really? In my experience my friends that were raised in an environment that did not have strong family ties (or religious ties) the children were some of the freakiest. As oppose to the children who were raised in families that were around their children a lot and had strong religious ties. Granted, there is always an exception to the rule.

..and the "day care" babies ended up with a host of emotional problems since they were starved for parental attention. So no surprise as teens and young adults they have a distorted concept of..relationships.

i got laid for the first time when i was 15, so whats your point?

Yeah, this doesn't sound much different than when I was in high school over a decade ago.

25 years ago for me. Every generation thinks they invented sex, and that their parents grew up in Pleasantville.

We're easy scapegoats, thats how.

Even when all of this is happening in a liberal state no less!

Oh come on. Are you insane? Slavery was a cultural choice and sex at this age is a result of biology. How can anyone seriously make that comparison?

If you want to get rid of sex, you need to get rid of the natural biological/hormonal urge that occurs at that age. However, fighting the laws of nature can be difficult. Maybe we should be drugging all these kids up with pills until they're 18...Would you like that?

They're the ones who are pushing abstinence only education, which in turn ensures that kids are ignorant of condoms, birth control, and how their body works. They're also the ones that are trying to make birth control harder to obtain, since it offends their gawd.

Yeah, and some STD rates are over 20%, so as much as people joke about it, it's a pretty serious thing.

Sex Ed. is seriously lacking in this country.

"Nearly 42 percent had engaged in vaginal intercourse by the age of 14."

That's pretty high considering only 50% have vaginas.

No, it isn't.

The problem is that current sex. ed. is based on abstinence, which is a flawed concept given human biology. It needs to transition to safe-sex methods to be effective.

And if anyone thinks the Christian fundy agenda doesn't play a role in sticking with abstinence, they're lying to themselves.

I don't consider abstinence education to be a part of sex ed. It's more like supplemental material, if you ask me.

I held out until I was 19.

Well...actually....all the girls held out until I was 19, so I went along with it :frown:

Places not to raise a family? Baltimore. Check.

Please don't confuse Baltimore city with the Baltimore Washington Metro area. The suburbs around Baltimore are actually quite nice and have excellent public school systems.

And just because this study was conducted in Baltimore does not mean that its findings are limited to that area. You're likely to find similar statistics (i.e. ages below the national average) in almost any poor urban area.

Do you know who sex works? A guy can take part in vaginal intercourse aswell. In fact, i's pretty crucial. It's probably just one 14year old slag popping cherries like it's a sport. hehe.
