Uptime before you have to reboot?

I'm running a rig with Windows XP and I find that if I don't reboot every 3-4 days, everything starts running really slowly. Usually I fix this by giving the comp the good old power cycle...

So is this normal? How long is your computer usually on before it has to be reset?

I run Win2K Pro, my longest uptime was 3 months, which amazed me coming from the Win98SE environment. I generally only shutdown/reboot if I'm making hardware changes I also usually shut down once a month to break rigs down for cleaning.

I'm in XP, and I generally go about a week. I miss Win2K. I'll probably format and reinstall that when I go back to school at the end of the month.

Doesn't it say in the Windows TOS that it works best when given its daily maintenence reboot?
I thought I read that in there.

The only times I've ever had to reboot my Linux systems is for kernel upgrades, and one time I screwed up a comp beyond repair (experimentation as root is NOT OK) and had to reboot to re-install everything.

My record is 31 days. I hope to get a nice 180-day uptime streak sometime. :)

My FTP server: 12:23pm up 28 days, 12:55, 1 user, load average: 0.05, 0.03, 0.00

I generally reboot my PC at home every few days, only because I mess with the BIOS and stuff all the time.

My Win2K Pro's longest uptime was 6 months (power went out). It's my "server" system, and it's been shut off only due to power going out (about 3-4 times). My development machine (also Win2k Pro) has crashed about a total of 4 times (in aprox. 1.8 years). When the GUI seems slow, I just kill explorer, and restart it - it usually fixes any "slowness" :)

except when XP takes the ram and SPANKS IT?

I had a good uptime in linux, but then I restarted for some reason... I think it was an accident....

I used to have the same problem as you LanEvoVI. My rig would run fine for a couple of days and then seem to lag or like the processor % usage would stay at 100% for no apparent reason. Now it doesn't seem to do it anymore, but that's just because my rig randomly reboots daily, usually during the night when I'm sleeping, and always gives me a weird error about how my Geforce 2 was to blame. I've gotten used to it though, and am planning to upgrade soon anyways.

It amazes me what people will tolerate as acceptable in a rig, a system that was randomly rebooting on a daily basis would have a screw driver taken to it pretty quickly around here :D

All that said, what cpu/mb combo are you using and what PSU ?

XP Pro about once a week ( at home )
Win2k every couple weeks. ( at work )
Linux RH7 98 days and counting ( at work )

EDIT:
Brag: Linux [FTP machine] 100 days
Linux [NS machine] 300 days :D

I just had 22 days going on my Linux box when it froze on me last night for some reason. Couldn't ssh in or anything, so I gave hit the ol reboot button. No debug messages left behind in the log either. It gave me an excuse to upgrade the kernel though.

Yeah, it kinda pisses me off since sometimes it resets my preferences as well, but I'm not that knowledgeable about computers so I don't want to tinker with it lest I screw something up. Better to have a slightly messed up computer rather than no computer.

All that said, my rig , and I'm not sure what brand PSU. It came with the case, and all the site says is 300W ATX. Any help would be nice, though I've basically given up because there are a lot of little glitches in my system :(

btw sorry LanEvoVI for the OT post

Why bother asking this question?

If you use Win2K or newer, you have great stability and the question of how long you go without a reboot becomes completely irrelevant. If you use a Win95 based operating system (includes Win95 and all its revisions, Win98 and all ITS revisions, and WinME), then you would be extremely fortunate to squeeze a week out of it. Some people have to restart every couple hours. Terrible.

Quite a useless thread.

Actually, I've hit the max uptime limit on 98 SE several times on my laptop. I use it only on the weekends, and it's in suspend mode while I'm not using it.

Of course my xp install is rock solid. I usually shut of off because of the fan noise.

Wow, I didn't realize there was a 'max uptime limit.' What happens? It just brings a message up saying you have to reboot and there's no other option?

I'm running WinXP and i never need to reboot except when programs/updates require it. I think my longest time has been around 1-2 months? And then I had to turn it off because I was leaving campus. ::shrugs::
