Upscaling DVD player - does the component jacks upscale too?

Silly question but my tv only has 1 HDMI jack. Since my cable box will be true-hd, I'm thinking about using the HDMI jack for that, leaving only component jacks for the dvd player. Will my upscaling dvd player's component jack output upscaled video?

Yes. The upscaling is done inside the DVD player, not the IC (interconnect, aka cable).

Actually, assuming that it isn't one of those famous players that went against the rules, the upconverting should only be output via a digital connection, not component.

OK, 2nd silly quesiton:
1. is an upscaling dvd player really important when my tv has an upscaler already? I don't mind spending the 80 bucks, just curious (I have like 3 progressive scan dvd players and wouldn't want to waste money)

Interesting - care to share the name of one of them? Argh, how to I get my dvd player and cable box to play happy then? BTW, I don't own the dvd player yet so I'm open to suggestions

Upscaling might matter, might not. Some upscaling players don't offer much visible difference from either component or upscaled HDMI. Try both and decide for yourself.

I am leaving HDMI free for Sony PS3.

I believe there's an option in your TV's menu to turn off the upscaler option correct? If you have both options, I would test both the HDTV's built-in upscaler and the DVD player's upscaler and see which one you prefer.. Do you have the TV and the DVD player's make and model number?

According to AVS forums, the upconverting signal can go through component cable as well as digital connection.

Baked, it really depends on the display format.

I have a Samsung 56" DLP HDTV, which is native 720p. It will display everything 720p regardless of the input source.

Unfortunately you are getting some misinformation here. You can search over at avsforum for the answer but for the most part recently made upconverting players only upconvert through the DVI or HDMI port. Some older models such as the Zenith 318 and Momitsu 880 upscale through component and a player or two not made in this country will as well. Additionally there may be a player or two that can be hacked to upconvert over component. You might visit this thread Players That Upconvert Over Component

I have a 32" hdtv which supports upto 1366x768. My htpc (running windows media cener 2005) is connected via vga to the tv. When I watch dvd's in mce it is scaled to fit the whole screen. Is it basically doing what a upconverting dvd player would do or would the upscaling dvd player give better quality

Well, the question should be do you even want to use a DVD that upconverts over component?

Whether the signal gets upconverted in the player or gets upconverted in the TV, the bottom line is that it has to be upconverted somewhere to match your displays physical resolution. I would tend to believe that for most situations, the upscaler in your $2000 TV will do a better job than the upscaler in your $100 DVD player.
