UPS

How many of you out there use an UPS. Its funny how we spend so much money on our systems and dont get an UPS to protect our investment.

not me, a surge protector is good enough - blackouts/brownouts are very rare in Dallas - we have high quality power 🙂

I have 3 APC UPSs protecting everything in my room. We have excellent power around here but I would not even think of running my system without a UPS. I strongly believe in power protection. Whenever I build a system for someone I include an APC SurgeArrest standard. My policy is "No APC power protection, No warranty!"

I also don't trust any company other than APC. I had a Tripplite UPS (that I paid WAY too much for) that did a LOT more damage than good.

If you look around, you can get real good deals on APC products. I paid $170 for my Back-UPS Pro 650 (2.5 years ago). That's at least $100 cheaper than I have seen it anywhere else. I also got 2 APC Back-UPS Office 280s for $35 each. By the way, all of them were new.

I bought a couple APC UPS after powersurge and blackouts killed a monitor and my tv. Good thing i had warrenty on my monitor.

Have a Surge-protector, but that isn't a big deal really.

Am trying to get a UPS, but the sodding things just cost so much 🙂. Line-conditioner might be a wiser choice anyway.

But that's realisically only for servers. Surge Protector / small UPS should be enough for most of us - line conditioners is really only something you want/need if you got LOTS of $$'s worth of equipment (5-6+ figures) running 🙂.

... or if you are very paranoid 🙂.

I don't have one for my el-cheapo Dell system (just use a Monster surge protector).

But for my new power rig that I just spent $2000+ on, yes, I have it hooked up to an APC Back-UPS Pro 500 USB. If I'm already spending so much on the components, another $100 is a drop in the bucket to protect that hefty investment.

I have three APC Smart UPS 1000 UPS's (recently purchased to replace three NSSI 1200VA units that started failing after seven years) and three Topaz 2KVA line conditioners. From personal experience, I would not put any system of mine on line with out adequate protection. PowerChute has logged sags to 84V and peaks to 134V with quite a few power failures that caused the battery to switch in. Looking at a weeks worth of logs would convince anyone on the same power system I am to get solid UPS and line conditioner protection. 1000VA (or 1200VA) may seem like overkill, but I regard it as cheap insurance for several K of electronics I could ill afford to lose.
