We're having frequent T-storms in our area and a flash of lightning somehow caused a few PCs and the router/modem to blink off and back on again.

I figure that I should really invest in a UPS unit because in case the power goes out, I can still use my laptop. It'd be a great idea to still have networking capability in case of a severe storm that doesn't knock out the cable TV lines, and in case zombies attack.

How large of a UPS should I get for about 3-5 hours of operation for my networking components (router, cable modem, VoIP router)?

Somebody can do the math for me, but I think it's a good idea regardless. It would also be a good idea to ground your cat5 into something that at least gives a lighting strike or surge an option of arcing to other than your computer.

I've been getting most of my UPS's from refurbUPS.com. At least the things have fresh batteries in them. A 2200VAC should keep your router going for a few days :)
