is there anything I should know ahead of time? it's from earthlink.is the installation easy? I'm going to school for networking right now but we havnt gotten around to it yet.I heard you can optimze the speed better is there a site i should go to for this

It should be just a matter of installing the NIC in the case and letting Windows find it when you start up. You will have to install the drivers for it (can be a pain sometimes) and installing the Earthlink software. If you already have an Earthlink account, just follow the prompts to set it ip. If you have to create a new account, click that button. I have Earthlink DSL and instead of using the Earthlink connection interface, I use the Ivasion WinPoet software that Earthlink uses and is installed from the Broadband software disk. The Earthlink Connection software uses the WinPoet software to connect.

Using the WinPoet software allows you to use your own internet brower and email client. If you are using IE6 you can export your bookmarks and cookies to a floppy then reimport both after installing the Earthlink software. You will have a bunch of new bookmarks added during installation.

Make sure you put the filters on all the phones in your house or you may end up with weird static on the phones. The crossover cable goes between the modem and the NIC you installed.

Just out of curiosity, what modem did they send you? What NIC did you get?

setup is a cinche. Once you plug the modem in, and put the NIC in . . and hook em all together, windows (or whatever you are running . . ) will find it and automatically use it. I know Linux is pretty much the same (after I setup my dual boot: lesse if I can get internet . . lets open the browser and poke around in the . . ooo, its already working!).

So, you, if you are leaving a 56k, you will wet yourself everytime you realize you don't need to dial up and are getting ridiculously huge speeds (relative to 56k).

enjoy.

up and early waiting for it 7:30am. I have a nforce2 asus deluxe board could i use the 3com or nforce nic thats onboard?

Use the nVidia LAN connector. I am using it in favor of my trusty old 3Com 3C905C-TXM NIC. It's fast and has low CPU utilization. And it rides in the HyperTransport bus leaving your PCI bus free (or more free) to accomodate SCSI (<- my next move).

Yes you can use the onboard NICs that are on the A7N8X Del mobo. I do use nVidia NIC myself and the 3com port for my LAN. The LinkSys card that came with my Earthlink kit is in my other PC.
