UPS recommendations

I have 6 computers, cable modem, 2 routers, hub(don't care much about that), and 3 monitors. I'm looking for a something under 200 bucks that will keep all of this up for at least 5 minutes to avoid brownout surges and ability to shutdown properly durning power outages.

Any and all suggestions are welcomed.

Unless youre buying a Rack UPS, youre going to overload it! I suggest you buy 3 seperate UPSs for a start.

Like venomous suggested, get 3 seperate Ups, usally each one will have a plug that'll connect to the usb ports to provide updates to the computer about the battery time left.

Google "Refurbished UPS"... you'll find vendors selling refurb APC UPSes that support network management. Look at something like the SmartUPS 1000 or bigger... those support multiple computers.

6 computers? no way in hell you are going to keep those going for 5 minutes for under 200 dollars. unless the computers are all relatively low power, you will need to get multiple 1000-1500VA UPSes and they are costly. are you running stuff with very important info? if you are just paranoid about the power surge, then you are way over-doing it. if you get a 1500VA APC, for example, it has some plugs that are surge protection only and you can connect some of the computers to that, or at least all of the peripherals so they dont draw on the backup power.

What systems are you running and most importantly what displays do you have, LCD or CRT and what size. Also are you talking about $200 total or per UPS unit.

Basicaly, in hot deals there is an APC XS800 APC for $80 so 3 will run $240 + tax. With 540 W it should support two decent systems with two LCDs maybe even small CRTs for the 5 minutes you need without overloading,

If you have a top of the line high power system then it will not be enough unless you take it easy on tasks not to overload (no games or CPU heavy programs).

This is the closest I can get you to $200 total if that is what you want. You can try finding refurbished units with more power but I don't think it will happen for less with any reliability.

EDIT, if you only need it for quick and temporary power outages, you cat connect the monitors to the surge only outlets. This will give you more power to work with. Also the UPS can shut down the PCs via USB once battery power gets to a low enough level for safety. I don't know if they can save data.

You hay be able to set up hibernate and have the systems hibernate once power goes off or just by pressing the power button therefore not requiring monitors.

Not gonna happen. Sorry man but you're prolly lookin' at spending at least 3 or 4 times that much to do what you're wanting.

thanks again for the suggestions, wasn't sure if it was possible or not.

To answer a few of the questions, I have 3 game machines that I'd like to not have any power surges hit, 2 athlon 64 setups and 1 athlon xp setup. All are CRT monitors, 21 inch, 19inch, and 17 inch. I'm looking for as least expensive as I can. Like I said I have 3 game machines(played daoc for too long and ran several accounts at times), email machine, server, and general use pc. Nothing real vital on most of the machines but I'd like to avoid any power surge issues, blew a router awhile back because of a squirel on a power line caused a few brownouts.

So bottom line looking for advice on how much I can load a ups with just for a few minutes if I have brownouts or give the pcs enough time to shutdown during a poweroutage.

The problem is not with how long they will stay up but if they overload. Every UPS that I have seen worked fine for at least several minutes at max load. But once you overload they just die instantly.

Those CRTs will hurt, especially the 21". I would recommend the 800 UPS from hot deals and maybe run then run backup only to the PCs and not the monitors. Then set up your system to hibernate if you press the power button or with some key combination so you can shut them down without a monitor and not loose any data.

You may be able to run the systems with the 17" monitors connected but even that would be a stretch. You would need a much stronger UPS to run with the monitors which would cost you more then $200 each.
