my little brother buys snus from 7-11 all the time. maybe it is the stuff you are not considering snus, but it says snus right on the container.
It may be called snus, but it's not snus.
Though, some places may now stock the American-market snus under the General brand.. haven't checked. No real Swedish-style snus is truly available at any gas station.
I used to buy that pseudo-snus shit, can't stand it though - not after experiencing real snus.
Other than the American label brands using Swedish-produced tobacco, I would be hesitant to even say they share anything with snus, including the tobacco itself.
Snus is steam-pasteurized, whereas American dip and chewing tobacco is fire-cured (and fermented?). This alone leads to a remarkable difference in terms of how bad for the body/mouth it is, as well as it simply makes for a better product.
Again, I can't say if any American "snus" is fire-cured, I do not believe so, but with the other shit they do, it doesn't follow the Swedish standards.
Plus, their "FDA" regulates everything in the product, and thus everything is 100% food grade, and the few additives are clearly listed with E-number (how they label flavoring agents and preservatives) - basically... salt, flavor chemicals, and water.
Here... who the fuck knows what they put in the tobacco, and it's like holding a piece of candy under your lip for awhile...
oh, and they also have abysmally low nicotine levels in comparison to the average Swedish product - plus, no Extra Strong options.
And it's still supporting Big Tobacco here in the states, and the may in fact be more evil than UPS.
I'm forced to mail-order, but thankfully 99% of the time I go to order at Northerner.com, they have what I want at their PA warehouse, so no customs or other bullshit to deal with (at least on my end of the transaction), though it is taxed (but I'm okay with taxing these types of things).
As for some more recommendations, I'd say definitely peruse the list lsxkllr gave you... but like he said, you'll actually probably have a bit of a shock tasting the first real Swedish one after using the American-brand offerings.
I had used Malboro, and I accepted the sweetness (and in a way, somewhat welcomed it, at least in the Frost/mint variant)... but I rather enjoyed the lack of such in the mint flavors of Swedish brands.
There are quite a few in his list that I have decided I most certainly dislike, but some I haven't even tried. Generally, I can't do any kind of "sweet"-style flavor (even without sweetness) in the Swedish approach (cranberry without any sweetness is a disturbing flavor profile imho, not even sure if I'd like cranberry in my tobacco anyway but it was a sample of a brand I otherwise like)... but I tend to stand by an all-encompassing mint flavor. A wintergreen one I tried I hated, and so far I haven't really found any that I liked from the first taste... one day I might, given that I sample more products.
My stand-by snus: Thunder Frosted, and Offroad Frosted.
Both are from V2 (manufacturer), and honestly, probably the most compatible with an American-palate. Thunder is the Extra-Strong brand, Offroad is their middle-of-the-road brand (sometimes slightly cheaper than similar normal-strength offerings), and Phantom is their cheap offering iirc.
Offroad Frosted is, well honestly, kind of boring, but it's serviceable and does the job (and I love their pouches, they make an excellent pouch/mini-teabag-style portion that seems like a better material than other companies), and I definitely don't disagree with the flavor...minty is about all I can describe, not much too it, salty as usual with a hint of sweetness and a mild/boring/neutral tobacco background.
Thunder Frosted is basically two of those portions rolled up into one (same 1g portion). At 16mg/g nicotine, if you don't use it often, it's either a great high or if you really aren't accustomed to the strength, possibly a bit woozy (also noticeable if your body is just not feeling like taking all that in, I've had to take one out to shake off a dizzy spell).
It has a much better "Frosted" flavor than their normal offering, and in comparison, its a bit sweeter in flavor (don't think any sugar is added). If you can handle the strength, you'll probably love it (I think it "runs" a bit more than other snus, it's definitely more moist than many others... can't compare to other extra-strong offerings).
They also have, using the same tobacco and pouch material, a Long+ and Mini offering under the Thunder brand. Long+ is like 1.5x standard (12mg/portion ?), and it's a longer and "thinner" pouch, i.e. more discrete.
Thunder Mini is a tiny little pouch, 0.5g iirc, and has the same nicotine as a 1g standard portion (~8mg/portion). Same strength and more discrete than normal portions (if portions are your thing, as it is for me), but sadly, you also get fewer portions with each of the "lesser" steps in the Thunder lineup. You get 24 portions in most normal snus cans iirc.
