The route that you think it should take is not necessarily the best route, or even a practical or possible route. Your package is not the only package on the vehicle. What appears to be the "long" way may be the most efficient way.

There's no way under any circumstances that sending it to 4 other cities, and another country is quicker than when it was in walking distance of the OP. That doesn't make sense on any level, and it certainly doesn't require a degree n logistics to figure it out....

Sure routing method maybe illogical times where they take weird paths. OP only lives 5 miles from boston. sending a to boston then routing it west to connecticut is just too illogical. windsor lock according to google is nearly 90 miles from boston.

Unless the OP lives in some tiny little town where UPS is contracting out delivery there's really no reason to do it.

Hell UPS drives from their san jose hub to morgan hill for deliveries. Its about 20 miles or so. I'm pretty sure boston has a hub and driving 5 miles out is not unreasonable. If they are willing to do 20 miles over in california.

Companies like UPS use GIS systems to route packages most efficiently.

One example is that UPS shaved off something like 30 million miles off their routes by eliminated left turns and saving 4 million gallons of gas.
(Might be off by a little but those figures are what come to mind for my GIS classes many years ago)

4,000,000 gallons * 3.05 dollars per gallon = 12,200,000 per year in savings.

That is a lot of coin/

Let the computers rout the packages so that their shipping prices can remain low.

No.. they wouldn't.

It would sit in a warehouse until they determined your shipping time has come.

If you pay for 5-7 days.. dont expect it in 2.

UPS gets packages across the country in 5 days with standard shipping. and for me it's 1-2 days anywhere in the southeast.

i don't love them by any means, but delivery times are just not a good complaint. did you pay for two day shipping? 'cause you got a package from california in two days.

I have to agree. Given the logistics of the whole thing, it's pretty impressive that they can reliably get a package across the US in 4 or 5 days.

no, UPS is definitely fail. they damage *every* single package that has ever been shipped to me through them.

i like fedex. speedy shipping, never damaged goods.
