I sold a lcd monitor on ebay to a person that lives in CA, I live in NY so long way for the package to travel to its destination. I sent the monitor via UPS Ground in a custom box with multiple layers of insulation to protect the monitor from any damage. I used spongies and sponge envelope pads from fedex all over inside the box also taped the box all around for added protection. A week later I received an email from the buyer saying he never received the monitor. I was like what. :Q I checked the tracking number at UPS.com and this is what I found at bottom, that the package was damaged while in shipment. I called ups and they told me to file a claim , which I did and they told me I will receive the paper work the next business day. I insured the package at $650. Anyone here have any experience with this before can please help me out on what to expect from UPS. Am I going to get back the damaged package with the lcd still inside and will I need the original receipt showing the actual cost or can I print a AD from a website? Any suggestion will be appreciated.

Hmm I once ordered a bunch of clothes from macy's.com. The UPS webpage showed that the package was damaged during shipment  I called UPS up and they said that the package was going to be sent back to the shipper. They told me that the shipper had to fill out the claim forms etc. I couldn't even take a look at the package to determine if it was damaged or not since it was clothes. Well a few days later, they delivered my package with no signs of damage. Hopefully that'll happen to you. But if not, I think you'll be the one who's paying the $650 bill. The general consensus of the UPS horror stories I've heard around here is that UPS will always say that the package was insufficiently packaged and thus UPS will not give you one penny for the damaged item(s). :(

once UPS issues a claim, they hold the merchandise. well its not really UPS, its an outsourced insurance company.

Heres what a claim form says:

specify replacement value or repair cost
name adress, etc....
please include copy of commercial invoice

fire up excel and backdate an invoice. you insured for $650, put down $650 for the paid price. they can reimburse and send the LCD to salvage or pick up the repair bill. its at their discretion

UPS, electronics, and insurance claims dont mix. Even if you pack it perfectly, IIRC if its not double-boxed they will deny it.

<< Got a solution, use USPS.

I second that. Never had a problem with USPS. Or you could go with fedex. BTW, if you're ever around UPS headquarters at 5:00pm, stand out there and see the wave of teenagers walking in going to work. That'll give you an idea of who or what handles your packages. ;)

i'll post here what i did on the other link. you should return his money, once you confirm the merchandise is damaged and work out the rest with UPS. hopefully it's only the box thats damaged and not the merchandise. if that's the case repackage it and send it via USPS.

As long as you had 2" of cushioning on every side of the monitor, and a well taped, and packaged box, you will get the value of the monitor back to via check, in about 2 weeks. You will have to show them a receipt, or atleast find some place that sells the monitor, and show them that price (try to find the price closest to $650).

UPS doesn't nef up sh!t as much as people really think they do... people just don't package it correctly, and don't realize that UPS does very little of the sorting work by hand... all done by machinery, which doesn't care if "fragile" is written on the box.

They will send the package back to you (believe me, I work at a shipping company), after they have inspected it. If for some reason they do not pay the claim, I would suggest that you contact your local UPS center, and ask for the manager. He will listen to you (that's his job), and if you plead a good case (talk about how much business you've done through them, how much you respect their company, how you just want to set it straight, etc), he will reverse the claim for you.

BTW, usps sucks... they lose about 10% of all international shipments.. we've never had UPS lose a single package, and only three damaged in several years (customers fault for crappy packaging, but UPS still paid the claims).

UPS local managers cant do sh*t. Every single one where I have had a problem the employees are consistently rude, the manager "isnt one duty" and they will refuse to give me either their names or their managers name.

2" packing WILL NOT suffice for electronics. For normal items, yes, but according to UPS,

Note: Fragile objects, such as electronics, glass, ceramics, and artwork, require special packaging for safe shipment. These packages may require added cushioning or a double box.

UPS WILL screw you if it wasnt packed this way. USPS is much preferable, IMO, for electronics, simply because THEY WILL pay.

Thanks guys for all your support and sound advice. I did go ahead and return the money to the buyer early this morning. If UPS does not approve my claim I will harass them with 10 phone calls a day, since it is a toll free number :) and a huge amount of money for a college student. I think UPS destroyed my package because I used FEDEX pak padded envelopes for the inside wall of the box and aroud the lcd ahahah.

"Gonad the Barbarian,

Sorry about your package. I think I'm going to have to change my sig.

I am not ConantheBarbarian."

LMAO :D

Make a list of names of the people you talk to and their positions.

I hope you get your check as I've filed many over the years and not many at all got reimbursed for. I'd say 90% of the excuses are improper packaging. Of course, they are packaged correctly in double courougated boxing (one box, 2 layer boxing) and at least 3 inches of foam all around (same way you would get a Dell or Apple computer).

UPS somehow still manages to turn a computer box into a mess and the insides? Screws fall off, cdroms fall apart, case covers off, metal twisted like hell. And these are for the ones we recover...

Only because the package leaves the country and arrives into a foreign countries postal system, thus leaving USPS' realm. Few government postal services are as efficient and reliable as USPS. There are some countries you wouldn't dare to send valuable merchandise through as it's guaranteed to be stolen.

I am amazed that UPS even noticed the box was damaged and admitted that they were the ones that did it.

It must have fallen out of the plane from 30,000 ft.
