UPS communication problems in Win2k

Escalade

Senior member

I have a Back-UPS Pro 1000VA connected to my system, I?m running Win-2k, when the power goes out the system is set to give warning after 30-seconds, then shutdown after 5 minutes. When I pull the plug on the UPS I don?t get any messages (I know how this works, because I have another Win-2k system with the same UPS and that system works fine!) The problem is there is no communications between the UPS and Win-2k.

I?ve tried different connecting cables, verified port operation with other devices, even switched the UPS with the old UPS unit on a different system and have narrowed the problem down to within Win-2k.

The problem is I can?t find a way in Win-2k to uninstall just the UPS software and reinstall it... do I have to do a complete Win-2k reinstall just to fix this problem? Any ideas?

TIA

Serial. COM1 to be exact. 🙂

No. I use the built-in Win-2k UPS software... works fine on my other system.

It?s strange that there is no UPS listed in ?device manager? or in ?add/remove programs? - even on the system where the UPS and software are working perfectly! Looks like I might have to re-install Win-2k to get this working.

I guess no one ever encountered this situation? Aren?t I lucky! 😉

Well, here?s what I did... in case someone searches the archives?

There seems to be no way to just uninstall/reinstall the UPS portion of Win-2k, so I did a complete reinstalled of Win-2k, SP2, IE5.5, and all the security roll-ups, and it cured whatever problem(s) was causing the built-in APC software not to communicate with the UPS unit.
