I had a DVD player stolen off the truck at one of the regional centers. I tracked it via their website to Lexington, KY but it never updated for two days and my brother in-law never received it.
When I reported it missing, they said the system probably hasn't been updated and I should wait a few more days before I really reported it missing. So, I did and still no DVD player. [four days]
Okay, they recognize that the package is not where it should be, they will investigate. This is Monday. On Thursday, I call back and they say they are still investigating. I want my insurance and they say, well, it is not technically missing because they believe it was stolen by an employee and they are confirming will recover the DVD player. [eight days]
On the following Monday, I call again and they tell me that they will recover the DVD player except now it will be a little difficult in that the employee left the company last Friday. No, not fired, just not reported to work and his phone number is a non-working one. Uh, duh! [11 days]
I call back on Tuesday and say I want the insurance so I can buy another DVD player and hand deliver it myself. I get someone else on the phone who tells me that the insurance I put on the unit is too high and that they saw an ad for a DVD player that was a quarter of the insurance and that I jacked the insurance up so that i could profit. I would need to file a claim and it will have to go through adjudication to see how much money I really deserve. I am furious at this point and explain to them that I took the retail value of the player plus S/H and rounded it up to make an even number. I think the whole value was 10 dollars above. Also, it wasn't some cheap unit and that is why I wanted insurance because I didn't want an expensive unit to be busted on the trip. I was then told that I shouldn't ship it if it was so exepnsive and needed to be handled well.
At the same time, my dad is frustrated and he calls a friend in Lexington who is one of the top lawyers in the city/state. (Denny Crane!) He tells him what is going on. The friend makes a call to the site manager and asks him how the investigation is going. He has no clue and that he has never heard of any investigation. At this point the friend tells the manager that he will ask the State Police to investigate fraud and theft at the Lexington site. The manager asks to wait and he will call him back ASAP. I get a phone call an hour later from UPS saying that they are now crediting my CC with the full insurance amount and apologize for the delay, yadda, yadda, yadda.
[12 days days]
If dad had not used his connections, I wonder what would have happened. They spent more time, effort and money than had they just admitted it was not there and paid the insurance. For things I mail, I use USPS. The have branches just down the street from my home and where I work. No issues, no broken items, and nothing lost. (For the past eight years.) I still wonder some time if they had made up the theft story or if real, did they ever prosecute?
