UPS authorization letters?

I send packages to my mom's apartment since I work a 9 to 5 and she's retired. While the package is for me, UPS refuses to release the package (which is at their sort facility because they screwed up and .. forgot to deliver it.. ARGH!).. They asked for a letter from my mom releasing the package to me, but I don't feel like driving 20 miles out of my way and then back....

Soo... Can I just write a letter myself? Do they require a copy of her ID? I didn't ask because that would have sounded pretty fishy...
