Uppsala9496's home theater build

Mentioned in another thread how I am finally getting my home theater.

Moved into a new house in May. Mostly finished basement except for a drop ceiling. That will be finished tonight.
Now it is time to set up my home theater.
Went with the following (sadly had to buy everything):

Elac B6's for front and surround.
SVS PB1000 for the subwoofer.
Elac C5 for the center.
(thought about the SVS satellite system; not really sure what swayed me to go with the Elac's)

Denon avr-x1200w receiver.

BenQ HT2050 for the projector.
Peerless PRGS-UNV mount (had to support a local economy manufacturer).

Silver Ticket 110" screen (str169110) - was surprisingly easy to put together.

45 feet of monoprice cabernet HDMI cable.
150 feet of monoprice speaker wire.

Harmony home control remote with hub.

For the speaker mounts, went with VideoSecu MS56B 3LH wall mounts for front and surround. Since there are no holes in the speakers to super secure them to the mounts, will be using the foam that comes with the mounts and Blu-Tack adhesive. Some folks on avs forum have used that combination and have not reported any issues.
Center channel mount is the Sanus NFC18B.

Oh and with 8 can lights having been put in (4 on the projector side of the room and 4 on the bar side of the room) I splurged and bought some Philips Hue lights. 2 starter packs so I will have 6 bulbs (cheaper than buying a starter pack and 3 additional bulbs). The two cans closest to the screen won't have bulbs screwed in.

And then there are the seats...bought 2 sets of 3 theater seat power recliners. Seats alone were about the same cost as all of the hardware.

Have a lot of work this weekend to get everything set up.
Paint wall black where the screen will mount.
Mount the screen.
Mount the projector.
Run all of the wiring. I'm going to keep all of the AV equipment in a separate room so the wiring will have to go in the drop ceiling. Biggest pain is going to be getting the speaker wires down the wall to the mounts. Would much rather go through the walls than on the outside for a cleaner look. We shall see how difficult it is.
Seats need to get carried into the basement and set up.

Old owners were kind enough *sarcasm* to leave a leather couch that weighs a metric ton in the basement. It wouldn't fit going up the stairs (I tried). So the saws-all is saying hello to it tonight.

I'm sure there is more work to be done that I am forgetting. I'll post some pictures as the work progresses.

Oh and the wife brought home an 8 week old puppy last night. Pure madness at my house right now. It did manage to piss down the heating duct in the kitchen floor. That was fun to clean.

what color are your surrounding walls and ceiling? if they are light, i'd strongly recommend painting them black or darker as well. it will make a huge difference. i only know because i too just painted the screen wall dark at first, then quickly realized i had to paint the ceiling and an adjacent wall as well.

look forward to pics!

Walls right now are a light gray, but they need to get painted since there was a soffit put in and some drywall patching. Previous owner did all of the work in the basement and couldn't manage to make the walls plumb.
Ceiling tiles are white with an 85% light reflective according to armstrong.
I'll be painting the first 2 rows of tiles black.

If the clock would move faster, I'd be able to go home and start this damn project. Calling in sick today wasn't an option.

and if you have tiles on the ground, i'd strongly recommend putting carpet in because you're going to have sound reflecting all over the place!

I replied to your post on the other thread:

TL;DR - I'm going with a DIY 75" gray-painted screen in the bedroom. Really liking my HT2050 so far, anxious to test it outdoors when it gets a little warmer! I'll do a separate thread when I finish my project up. I'm going with a Logitech Harmony home control remote as well. Anxious to hear how you like those Elacs after you get them all setup!

Will eventually post pictures. Ran wires today and of course the HDMI from monoprice is bad. Ran it and nothing. Took out out and nothing. Tested a new cable and everything works. So bad cable.

Sadly b&m stores charge a silly amount for one. Not sure I want to wait for a return from monoprice.
Home depot....at $70 for a 50 foot cable...

when i ran my HDMI cable in my wall/ceiling, i actually ran 2 of them for that reason, just in case 1 went bad or something. i have one sitting in the ceiling now just in case, but hopefully i won't have to use it. mine was a 25ft cable, i didn't use red mere but i used this one:

haven't had any issues with it in 3 years.

I wish I had done that in my last HT when I had a basement. I actually had that cable (in 50' length) & the plug fell apart when I unplugged it from the projector one day. What a pain to run a second one 😀

This post is getting me into the diy project mood. How much would a decent speaker setup cost? I haven't had to buy speakers in years.

Somewhere between $200 and $20,000 depending on what you are coming from, what room size, what you care about and your budget.

FWIW I was extremely happy with my PSB T45 towers + center, Rythmick F12 and Emotiva ERD-1 speakers for a 12'x18' room. I think that was around $2200. Haven't worked out the new budget yet it will probably be a bit higher

Was going to post pictures this morning, but my work computer wasn't playing nice. Flickr where I was going to host the pictures is blocked and google for some reason no longer provides nice links.

Everything is pretty much done. Got the projector dialed in last night. Still messing around with setting up the Harmony Home remote and the networking on the denon receiver (can't figure out where to access the menu on that).
Dragging ass today from bringing 700+ pounds of seats to the basement. If I can stay awake tonight I'll get the pics up. Otherwise it's tomorrow.

Try out imgur: (assuming it's not blocked as well)

What's your settings for the HT2050?

Imgur even has been weird for me the last couple of days.

What I usually use and it won't let me upload there lately.

Looks like I can post a few pictures of the finished project (still need to hide wires and am waiting on my center channel speaker stand).

Green chair is there temporarily. Will get moved this weekend.

The door to the left is my storage closet where the av equipment is stored.

Went a little offset to the left for the screen so the chairs wouldn't be against the side wall. The wall the screen is mounted on is the backside to a bedroom wall.

Tonight I'll post some pics of the AV room and from the screen side of the room towards the back. It's a pretty big basement (full size bathroom and linen closet down there as well).

Can lights are all Philips hue. Pics in previous with the PJ working are when I was trying to get the receiver to connect to my network. No luck last night. Sees the network at 100%, just won't connect to it. Have a netgear R8000 nighthawk x6. Think I may need to disable UPnP on it per a post I saw on AVS forum.

Went with a split ceiling tile instead of a single hole. Didn't trust myself enough to get a nice clean cut.

Oh and this was HDMI calbe number 2 that I installed. It was a little too short. When I removed it from the back of the receiver, this happened.

Blackout curtain is going over this window.

Some mid construction mess after I moved the keezer to the backside of the bar.

I may mount the screen about 6-8 inches higher than it is. Second row needs to have the front row people recline to see the very bottom of the screen. That 6-8 inches will solve that issue.

And didn't paint the wall black yet. Wanted to see how things would turn out as is for now.

I spent about $1,250 on my speakers.
In hindsight, I wish I had satellites in the back. The bookshelfs are a little big and are very noticeable. Mounting them was a major pain in the ass too since I couldn't mount on a stud on one side. Long story short I had to use some massive toggle bolts.

not bad!

just a note when you move the screen up higher you will have more light reflecting from the ceiling which will hurt the contrast a little bit. yet another reason to paint the ceiling!

also are you going to do any wire management? those wires hanging would drive me nuts lol.

Yup, that's what happened to me, only on the projector side. In addition to running dual HDMI cables, I think I'm going to invest in a pair of short right-angle adapter cables just to help with that issue.

Yes, blue LED's under the seat. Won't ever use them in the front row since when reclined, the light reflects off the screen.

Cable management happens this weekend. Will get some cable covers to put up and then paint them to match the walls. Just ran out of time this past weekend.

AV cart in the storage room that I am still in the process of organizing.

A view just outside the storage closet towards the back of the room (furnace room behind the double doors).

And a view from the corner window area.

Finally was able to get the receiver to connect to the network. Had to disable UPnP.
Also realized that the cable box was set to 720p and stereo. Changed those to 1080p and dolby digital surround. Very noticeable difference.

Once my 25' 3.5mm cable arrives this week I will run audessey to get the speakers calibrated correctly.
Then it's on to fine tuning the PJ. Right now have it on eco mode and have made no adjustments to it.

Have a spare PC running Win10 that I should hook up as well for watching movies. Just need to figure out the easiest way to control it. Keyboard and mouse don't seem like much of an option with everything being in a separate room.

Or do I just put the Xbox One down there?

1. K400 compact wireless keyboard with touchpad:

http://www.amazon.com/Logitech-Wireless-Keyboard-Touchpad-Internet-Connected/dp/B014EUQOGK

2. M515 "couch mouse":

http://www.amazon.com/Logitech-Couch-Mouse-M515-Blue/dp/B004HIN7SI

3. USB over Ethernet extender:

http://www.amazon.com/WEme-Extender-Ethernet-Extention-Adapter/dp/B00GQRZSMG/

The K400 is my standard recommendation for an HTPC PC controller because it gives you a nice small keyboard with a built-in touchpad, which is really convenient for getting full computer control without having to have a giant keyboard or an actual mouse. However, there are times when you want a mouse, like for gaming, or if touchpads frustrate you (I don't mind touchpads for a little while, but if I'm surfing the net or something on the big screen, it starts to drive me nuts). The M515 basically has a tinted piece of plastic on the bottom, which allows you to use it on weird surfaces like your pants leg or the arm of your chair. Both units can pair to a single Logitech Unity receiver, just download the software here to re-link the mouse to the keyboard USB receiver if you do decide to get both:

http://support.logitech.com/en_ch/software/unifying

The max a USB cable can do is 16 feet; the USB over Ethernet extender extends this to 328 feet using a standard Ethernet cable. I use this setup in conference rooms installations all the time when the computer is hidden away somewhere, but they want a wireless keyboard & mouse on the conference room table to use with the projector. Pretty nifty. I either run them under the floor, if there's room available, then up through the table, or else hang them through the ceiling. As long as you can get a clear line-of-sight, the Logitech RF receivers work at a reasonable distance, so even poking a small hole in the room somewhere (like the corner of the closet) could work fine - just have to play with how much material the radio can transmit through if you want to hide it. Alternatively, you can setup IR control via a USB FLIRC adapter:

http://www.amazon.com/FLIRC-FL-09028-Universal-Receiver-Components/dp/B00BB0ETW8/

Then just setup something like Girder to map control functions:

https://www.promixis.com/girder.php

This would let you map your Logitech remote (via the IR blaster hub) to your computer for full-screen media playback in PLEX, KODI, etc. using a single, standard remote control.

Nice! Standard strip lights with the tiny remote? I put a roll under my last couch with the multi-colored LED's, looked awesome, made it feel like TRON
