Upping from 9800 XT to 6800 Ultra (potentially)...

Hey folks, just trying to get some opinions to see what you think on my situation. Right now I've got a Radeon 9800 XT (before you flame, I got it for $175 in Dec. 04 while the 6600 GTs in AGP cost $250) with an Athlon 64 3200 (winnie). It's about that time of year when all the newer games come out (FEAR, Quake 4, etc.) and I need a bit more firepower to play them wel. I'm in high school and have a crappy minimum wage job, so it's out of the question for a 7800 GTX/X1800 XT and a new motherboard (since I just have AGP right now). Therefore, I'm trying to find a cheap card that will nearly max out the AGP line so i'll be able to upgrade next year. I've looked at the benches, and I'm pretty pleased with the numbers of the 6800U , but is it foolish to upgrade from one generation's top card, to the next gen's? Lemme know what you think. Thanks for reading!

what price you getting the ultra for?

i sold my 9700 pro for 140$ and bought an ultra for 360$.

i think you can get an ultra for like 300 or less now used?

i guess you really want to know if the ultra will last another year.

well you also have an oportunity to ditch the card and the board and jump to pci-e

hmm i guess im not much help.

This makes total sense to me if you have the cash for it. Best thing to do in terms of bang for buck is stay one generation behind. The 7800 and 1800 are coming out now/already come out. This in theory will push your price on the ultra down a bit. Personally I think the Ultra is a little over priced though. If you can live without pixel shader 3 you should go with the ATI x800XL or even the x850GT. ATI cards are cheaper, although drivers aren't very good. Wow, what an ATI sales guy I am right? Drivers are bad and no Pixel shader 3.0... still, it's cheap and if you look at the benchs it more than holds it's own against the 6800 series. Just my thoughts

yea....x800gto2 would be pretty good if you're using agp
but if you think about games that are coming out like cod2 and FEAR
upgrade's your only chance (i might have to upgrade myself for FEAR)
i'd say go for pcie if you have the money

Yeah, it had crossed my mind to get an X800 GTO2 and a cheap motherboard... but the 6800 Ultra is just so hardcore!!! Oh, and I've PM'd a guy in the BST forums about his 6800 Ultra, $275 is his asking price shipped. At one point I was also thinking I'd wait until later in december and buy a 7800 GT and mobo, but I really really want a new card for FEAR 🙁 Thanks for your guys' input!

7800 gt can be had for like 320 with rebate....it's like twice as good as the ultra (exaggerrating)
but why get an ultra when you can get a gt for like 50 more?!

I wouldn't bother with a 6800U - it's not exactly cutting edge these days plus it's noisey as hell. Try a 7800 GT or X1800 XL instead.

Reason for not getting X1800 XL/7800 GT: price, and the lack of PCIe board. Something tells me I won't get all that much for my current board, so I figure i'll just max out the AGP portion. Who knows, maybe I will end up waiting and buying a 7800 GT + board if the guy PMs back with bad news (that it's not available or w/e) for the ultra. Will a 420 watt PSU run a 6800 ultra?

Yes. And I'd agree that getting a 6800U if you can get a used one cheaply (or even better, a 6800GT for cheaper than that or an X800/850XT or similar) would be your best option for now...you'd end up dumping a lot more money into a PCI-E solution and not getting much more performance out of it unless you wanted to jump into the "really high end" range.
