UPNP router with 100mb WAN port?

Just curious what broadband service you have that runs at 100mb

Actually, Optimum Online cables modems such as the SB4200 perform slightly better with a router with 100mb wan port even tho the max speed you wil see is around 8-9Mb (yup, 8000+ kbps is what I average

That being said, I am using this:

SPI, VPN router

It does IPsec and PPtp endpoint (and passthru), SPI (with logging), url filtering and has the 100mb WAN port.

I am very hapy with it, especially with built in SPI firewall and VPN for $60 after rebate.
Coupled with my $60 Toshiba cable modem I picked up last week from Crap USA. My speeds avg well above 8000 kbps.

That SMC router does look good.

Still wonder if there is also a router with UPNP that will work with such applications as Winxp's remote desktop.

This one has UPnP. Trust me, it is the way to go. And yes, OOL is the fastest Cable/dsl for home users bar none.

either go with this router or the newer Linksys.

I say u will be fine with this router, altho I wouldnt and dont use the UPNP, just forward the ports you need for XP remote desktop.

Anyway, being that this does NAT AND SPI, for $60 it is what you want!!!!!!!

Yes, I'm seriously considering that SMC router and that link you provided has a MUCH better price than even Newegg.

But is it me though, or is it just a little odd that the 4 RJ-45 LAN connectors are in the front?

That is the only downside to it. It is a disfeature of the SMC routers.
If you can live with it then you are all set.
If you decide to get it, let me know. I have the latest firmware for it (see a post in this forum about it)
For some reaon they took it off their website, but I do have it.
Mine has been flawless so far with a Tosh 2200 modem and OOL.

How does the SMC provide so much bandwidth with SPI turned on?


A netgear that I have and will probably return I think does at max 1.5Mbps.......It is expensive if you want a good fast SPI firewall....

I just checked and indeed mine has a performance crest of 1.5Mbps...whichs sucks obviously....



I will be returning it...SMC might be nice if it is faster

What I will do is get the SMC 7004WFW...or maybe just that one.....

I am just wondering why you want a uPNP router. The technology is still in its early stages. The security holes alone should be enought to make you wait. All is saves you is taking the time to route the needed ports. Plus uPNP only works with programs coded for it if I am not mistaken. Any way here is an artical from Toms talkign about some of the issues.

Damn...the SMC7004WFW is banging...Appearantly it is cheap...found it for 168..


My Netgear is alright, but this is so much better.

THe Netgear didn't even work out-ofthe-box....It needed a firmware upgrade to even access the net as a dhcp client...lets not even talk about the PPPoE role I wanted it to take in place of my old SMC barricade.

EDIT: I guess all i pay is $50 extra over the Netgear and get all the goodies...
