Uplink Port

What does an uplink port do? Why is it often shared with the first port in a hub?

The uplink port is usually used to connect multiple hubs/switches together to form a larger network... on some hubs/switches there's a button on the it where you can switch between uplink or regular port...

if you connect the uplink port to a normal port of another hub/switch you'll have more ports to use. you can connect the uplink port to a computer too if you have a crossover cable.

Right now, I have a server attached to my workstation with a 50' crossover cable (without a hub).

If I want to add my old computer to this network, can I hook up the crossover cable from the server to the hub and then use regular cables from the hub to the workstations?

Just wondering if I can save up a few bucks and not see my 50' cable get wasted.
