My PII 450 is nice, but since it just turned two I was thinking about retiring it and getting something that had a little more zip. Cost is the biggest concern here, but I'm also thinking of the future. Do I go with DDR now or upgrade to it later? Is it worth it to pick up a T-Bird(266) or should I wait for something that takes a bigger step forward? I was thinking of going with a motherboard that supported a 266 bus and a Duron in the beginning, then scrapping the Duron for a Palomino when it comes out. Thanks for your suggestions...
 
One of the question we are all asking now is that will the KT133A support the Palomino. No one has a clear cut answer to that yet.

With Palomino/Morgan being released in July, it MIGHT be wise to wait a little longer. However, if you really cannot wait, a Duron + KT133A based motherboard cannot be wrong. Duron overclocked to 1GHz is not slow at all 🙂
 
Thanks. Do you know how much diffence a new video card would make on a PII 450? I've got a TNT 16MB card right now. Would I see much of a performance gain with a geForce2 or equivalent? I'm not too much of a quake fan, but I like strategy (a.k.a. Black and White) 🙂
 
you would see some improvement in your games with a GF2 videocard as it's less dependent on the cpu speed than your present card!
 
Even a Geforce 2 MX card would represent a big boost to your 3D gaming. And they are readily available on line for under $90. You might want to try that as an interim upgrade before upgrading the processor and motherboard. I think you will be surprised at how much better it performs than your old TNT.
