Upgrading

I`m currently looking into upgrading my current machine. As I want the upgrade to be very cost effective I hope to keep using many parts of my current system and hope only to upgrade the CPU and motherboard

I already own a
noname LX mobo (no new bios available)
pentium 2 266
case
ps (200watt)
1*64mb 66mhz ram and 1*64mb 100mhz ram
voodoo 3
soundblaster
CDwriter
modem
mouse keyboard etc
I`m not looking to overclock for now.

As my powersupply is only 200 watts, I`m afraid that I won`t be able to run a duron or TB, will a celeron 2 or pentium 3 be satisfied by only 200watt??
Also taking my memory into consideration I will probalbly be using a celeron 2. Or is a pentium 3 on 100mhz much beter (even if it means that for now I`ll only be running with 64 mb ram)?

If you have any advise,
I`ll gladly hear it

please keep money into consideration as I need to keep it cheap.
Or is it better if I do not upgrade and save for an entire new system?

I think it may be getting on a bit too much to upgrade, I had a 266+LX still about one year ago and have managed to rescue it.

If you want to upgrade, this is what I would recommend:

AMD Duron 600Mhz
128Mb PC133, (and you could use your 64Mb as well, as long as it works with and Via mobo)
Abit KT7

You would also need a new PS, 300W

That, I think is the best avaliable for the money at the moment.

Thank you AMB, I was already afraid that it might be past upgrading, that is why if I do upgrade I`d like it to be very cheap. So a new ps will be adding up the cost for the upgrade and therefore make it more attracitve to cancel that idea and save for an new system.

Would my 200Watt powersupply work with a celeron 2?

Anybody else has any ideas?

You should be OK with a 200w PS with a Celeron 2, you may be Ok with that PS with a Duron, you cannot tell

Hmmn, its a tough call on the 200W PS, but it *might* work, if you're willing to try it out. If not you can get a Celeron566 and clock it to 850 and beyond, if you can. A 200W PS should be sufficient for a Celeron as they only put out less than 30W.
