Upgrading Windows Mobile in older IPAQ (H4150/55) PDAs

Has anyone tried to ever upgrade their pocket PC to a more recent version of windows mobile that did not come with the PPC nor supported by the PPC manufacturer?

I have a Ipaq H4155 (also trying to sell it currently in For Sale forum) that has Windows Mobile 2003 on it. If I can upgrade to at least Mobile 2003 SE, or even 5.0, I'd be a very happy guy. Even 2003 SE would be fine because I like the landscape mode option, which the first edition doesn't have.

However, HP never supported or offered the upgrade. So I was wondering if anybody has done this kind of upgrade on their own, and how difficult it would be. I am sure there may be a bit of code modification involved in order to adapt to the H4155's hardware. However, I am hoping that this is minimal.

Anyways, your feedback would be appreciated!

IT should be fine. I don't think the profit margin is high enough to continue supporting older devices. Plus you'd have to pay royalties for the new versions.

The hardware are light and pretty much similar, they just want you to buy another PDA.

You can check google for a new rom. I know that for my hx4700, there are hackers that adapted wm6 for it and it's great. It originally came with wm 2003se.

The other thing to consider is if the 'upgrade' will be good for your ipaq. wm5 has been known to be a slow 'upgrade' for my ipaq. Wm6 however is pretty speedy.

Your best bet would to see if there is a unoficial rom for the device. Unlike PC's, WM update need to be device specific (and carrier specific for smartphones). There is no general upgrade rom that works on all devices. Odds are, outside of a hardcore ipaq hacking forum, you're not gonna find anything for it.

I looked into it a bit more, and according to the support page at [u=http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizs...skId=135&swEnvOID=1087]HP, there was a WM5 upgrade avalible for purchase, but now that link is dead.
