Upgrading Windows 98 to Xp Home on new hardware

I'm taking the DVD/CD, HD and NVIDIA video card out of my son's computer and installing on new motherboard, CPU, PSU and case.

Is it possible to upgrade the Windows '98 to XP Home without alot of glitches?

Would I be better off (might have hard time troubleshooting) to simply buy a new OS for my the "newer" system.

Thanks

😕 If you're upgrading to XP, you'll need to buy a new license of it.

That said, I would highly recommend investing in a new HD (not that expensive these days), doing a fresh install of XP (you can still use an upgrade CD if that's what you purchase), then manually copy over the data from the old drive. You'll generally get better performance and fewer headaches doing a fresh install of XP over an upgrade install.

I may have found the answer to my own question:

"Cannot transfer OS from one computer to the next".

What constitutes from one to the other, when you are carrying parts over to a new case?

That page is referring to an OEM license of XP. If you purchase an OEM copy of XP to save some cash, that license is tied to the PC you install it on. If you replace that PC down the road, you'll need to pick up a new license of XP.
