Upgrading Win98 to Win98SE with a Full Version CD???

***no responses in OS forum**** 🙁

It's been many years since I've upgraded 9x with a full version CD, so I need my memory jogged on something.

There are some files you have to rename/move or whatever in order for it to work and I can't remember what all they are?
If you don't, setup tells you "This computer already has Windows install, you need an upgrade CD blah blah......"

I know you have to rename win.com, win.ini... maybe command.com, but I can't remember them all.

If any of you know exactly which files I need to rename/move, PLEASE let me know. I don't have a Win98SE upgrade disk.

p.s. For those of you who will choose to suggest me to use a difference operating system, or ask me why I am loading 98SE, please don't bother... This is work, not home.

I remember with a W95 OSR2.x OEM CD you could just delete (and backup first) every instance WIN.COM and run from the CD. Or you could move the entire W95 folder to a TEMP directory on the HDD and change the install type from OEM to Upgrade by modifying a line in some .INF file, and run setup from the HDD. One had to be in DOS, the other didn't, I forget which.

Whether this works with Win98 I don't know because I have both the FULL OEM and 98SE Updates CD.

Why bother? If you have all the Windows updates the only thing you will not have in 98 FE that is in 98 SE is internet connection sharing. That does not really work anyway so it doesn't matter.

<< Why not just start over fresh and format c:? >>

I think that would be because it's a work computer with vital files on it.

I thought I remembered that Win98FE had some issues with USB support, it wasnt as good or as stable as 98SE, though I could be wrong.

I've always just started from the DOS prompt and done the Install, no renaming or anything. Just upgraded my Girlfriends Dad's computer that way from Win95, a few weeks ago. We used to do that at the Shop I worked at, because someone stole out Upgrade CD.
