What do you think would be the best way to upgrade to an SSD drive?
This is for a 2010 model MBP. It currently has a 500 GB drive but it's 5400 RPM which is pretty slow.

It's a great upgrade. Do you mean as far as backing up your data?

I do use the optical drive.

Yeah I mean what is the best method to clone the current drive to the SSD and then install it?

Get an external enclosure, drop the SSD in there, and use Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper to clone your old platter drive to the SSD.

Then swap the drives.

This is what I did with my two 2009 MacBooks last month.
