Upgrading to new iMac -- transferring data/apps etc

Hi folks,
My wife has an older generation iMac 27" with an original 1TB spindle HD, 8 GB of RAM and an i3 CPU. Ever since she did the latest OS update, Yosemite maybe... whatever is the latest OS... her system spins and spins and that old 1TB drive chugs along constantly making mechanical noise.

Now I can't remember the LAST time I even used a mechanical drive. All my PC's (I am a PC dude), have SSD's. I sat on her iMac and sure enough I would pull my hair out. I uninstalled the Anti-virus she had. I did a few searches online and followed advice to reboot, hold down keys, clear this, clear that. The encryption feature for the drive is disabled. Still slowish. Seems something is constantly been accessed or optimized.

My ONLY question at this point is as I don't use iMacs etc... she wants to have an SSD installed on her current iMac or buy a new one that comes with an SSD. Can I transfer all her CRAP from her current iMac including all the software she bought directly to the new iMac or do we need to buy new software like Microsoft Office etc., and whatever other junk or apps she has? In other words are those licenses locked to her older iMac and/or the old 1TB? Is this stuff done auto through her iCloud? I am not sure where to look up. Cheers.

You can clone the old hard drive to an external, and restore it to the new drive.

If you're not afraid of cracking that sucker open, go to ifixit.com, look up the repair guide for the iMac and drop an SSD in there to replace the HDD.

On the newer iMacs (2012 and 2013) it looks like they used blade SSDs like they had in the rMBP and MBA, so you might be able to get one of those if you want to set up a faux FusionDrive.
