Upgrading to New Chipset. Need help with repairing windows XP

I'm going to upgrade a Windows XP pc that currently has a Via KT133 motherboard with an nForce2 motherboard. I've heard from many people that changing a motherboard in windows XP can hose your system. I've also heard of a repair option. My problem is that I don't know how to use it. I know there is an option to repair installation when I boot from the XP cdrom, but what do I do after I select repair? Does this have something to do with a recovery consol? I once booted to a recovery consol and was clueless what to do once I got there 🙂 What exactly does the repair do? Does it wipe out the device drivers?

I'm just trying to prepare myself incase a problem arises. Your help would be greatly apprecaited. Thanks.

Well, this isn't the answer you're looking for probably, but meh.

Overall, I find just reinstalling the OS to be so so much easier. You can try to repair, clean, and remove old files, or, you can just install everything cleanly. This also guarantees that everything will run without conflict as well.

my 2 cents. eithter way, good luck 🙂

Search for other posts in Operating Systems. I've posted the steps that work best and quickest several times in response to the same questions. 🙂

I'm sorry I don't know who to give the credit to as I cut and pasted this into one of my own documents yetsterday...but it was posted yesterday on the forums...

Here's what you do for future reference:

Before you take out your old motherboard, go into windowsXP (also works with win2000)

1) then go to your device manager:

2)go to your IDE/ATAPI controllers section:

3)go to the main controller, i.e. VIA, SIS, INTEL controller (not the Primary or secondary) and update driver:

4)choose to update the driver manually, then it will come up with a screen of compatible hardware:

5)your options will be whatever is current, i.e. VIA, SIS, INTEL (whatever yours is), and also Standard Dual Channel IDE

6)choose the Standard Dual Channel IDE controller and click ok. It will ask you to reboot, hit no.

7)now simply turn off the pc and replace motherboard

8)turn system back on and it will now boot into windows and begin to find new components

9)now your done! Install new motherboard chipset drivers and your good to go
