Upgrading to E8500

Want to substitute the E6600 in my system with an E8500 and keep the rest of the system as is. Not sure if this new technology cpu will work with my OS and all the other goodies I have installed. Would I have to reinstall the OS? or would the system just continue merrily about its business? I hope the latter.

Note that I am presently overclocked and intend to push the 8500 to somewhere above the 4Ghz mark. What do you think?
 
Should work without any problems providing that you updated the motherboard's BIOS with the latest version that support 45nm CPU.
 
Thanks Doc. Not been on forum for a little while. While I am at it I think I'll get that 7300GT out of there and replace it with the 8800GT. Freshen things up and bit and run a few benchmarks.
 
Get the video card and save the rest for Nehalem. E6600 to E8500 is not worth it, especially if you need to upgrade your motherboard. An OC E6600 is still above par for this year.
 
If you will get the penryns, get the E8400... I don't understand why people are getting the E8500... You shell out almost $100 more for a .5 bump in multiplier.
 
Well since my board does not support E8500 it obviously will not support Nehalem either. So this means a mobo upgrade and most likely memory as well. Then suggest me a really good overclockable board, memory, and cpu. Love my 120 extreme though and would rather stay on air for the overclock. I'd rather not go quad on the cpu at this time. Not too heavy into number crunching and video editing. Thanks.
 
Nehalem is going to be a new architecture. Even if u buy a board that supports E8500, u will still have to change ur mobo, CPU and probably memory for Nehalem.

I agree with aussiestilgar in that u shld stick with the E6600.

Not sure about 1333 FSB support on your board but this might help penryn motherboard compatibility

If you are going to change motherbaords, u might as well get a quad while u are at it.
