My rig is starting to show signs of aging lol I currently have a Phenom II x4 840 cpu running on stock settings. It's been handling my everyday activities nicely, but running hot on some games. I was wondering if upgrading to a fx4100 would show significant improvement. Also, anyone with AM3+ FX experience please chime in. All suggestions welcome :)

PII X4 840 have no l3 cache right?

go for the 6300, the 4100 is not enough of a improvement I think.

If you had to upgrade, you should get at least an FX 4300 instead; it's marginally more expensive at worst, but will provide better performance than the 4100 by a fair amount.

However, if the only problem is the temperature, maybe getting a better cooler is a better solution.

FX6300, unlocked, 6T(cores) and runs at solidly high clock at factory default setting.

^^ This......the FX 6300 is really the best bang for the buck from what you have. Just make sure you have the latest bios on your AM3+ motherboard first.

Agreed. I have a Phenom II x 4 955. I put an FX-6100 in my media sever cuz I planned on using it for DLNA transcoding. Figured 33% more cores at .1gHz higher clock should give me about 35% faster speeds, right? Wrong. It's 15% at most. Not too dissappointed since it's a 95W instead of 125W, but still.... Get the newer core FX-6300. Wish I would have.

Thanks for all the suggestions guys. I have a hyper 212 CPU cooler and 5 case fans so I have sufficient cooling lol. But the price on the 6300 seems kind of high; I want to wait until it drops under $100 and ill bring you guys updates :)

Not worth it. In real world it would basically be like 10 seconds faster unzipping, 10 seconds faster to run certain computations, etc...

Either go for the FX6300 or stay with your current cpu.

I know it's more expensive (and higher TDP), but an FX 6350 might be an option as well? Didn't sound like overclocking was necessarily going to be involved and at stock that chip's 400MHz base over the 6300.

I got my FX-6300 in a bundle special at Microcenter, where they gave a free motherboard with it. So after I sell the motherboard, that should bring the total price of the CPU to well below $100. Do you have a Microcenter nearby?

If your board can handle it I would also suggest the newer FX-6350 so no over clocking will be needed. Especially if you already have an after market cooler to use.

With 6350 one doesn't need to OC. Sure you can push that thing to 4.6-4.7Ghz on good air or WC but why? It will perform good in anything your throw at it.
