If you have your license number you can just put a new board in your sony, install windows xp off a pure windows disc, (not the sony recovery disc) when asked for your license number punch it in, its perfectly legal.

If you are trully Old & Cheap, I wouldn't care about upgrade to XP, but I would just get a new Semperon 2200+ and mobo for $77 shipping include, and burn your self a copy of Linux or do a net install at $0.00.
Thanks for the link. I should have added "tech neophyte" to my ID - I managed the switch to Firefox, but just couldn't figure out OpenOffice so I broke down and bought MS Office (along with over $1K of Windows software).

Didn't know that - tried to get a Win XP CD a few years ago from Sony because I wanted to repair and not reinstall XP. Unfortunately, they wouldn't give or sell me one. Don't know how to get a CD without buying a retail / OEM copy.

OpenOffice isn't that hard, except that their documentation weren't compleate when they released 1.0 (have been playing around with it since beta 0.7), but now it is quite nice at 1.1.4 (version 2.0 is coming soon). However, at the releasing of OO 1.0 you could have downloaded StarOffice (Sun version of OpenOffice), and the documentation were great & exchangeable with OpenOffice.

It is not too late to switch to a free OS (try dual boot or live-CD linux), because Wine/CrossOverOffice & Win4Lin will get the bulk of Windows program to work under Linux. MS-Office run great under CrossOverOffice, and then kick in Win4Lin (similar to Win2k/XP compatibility mode) to run the rest of Windows apps that don't do well under COO.

PS. SimplyMepis (free) include CrossOverOffice & Win4Lin on the default install, and other distros you might have to search for the package & install.

Great to know - I'll have to give it a shot. I certainly feel I've spent more than enough money on MS. Just didn't want to throw away my current software investment.

Here's my situation. I built a comp for my dad and used the XP cd that came with my ibuypower computer to install windows. When I went to activate it, it said I've activated too many times. Anyways I don't really want to lie to MS so what do I need to buy? Can I just buy an activation code online? Is that what the license provides? Can someone post a link where to buy one?

Was your CD an ibuypower CD with windows xp on it or was it a pure Windows XP disc? According to a previous poster, you should have been able to get a Windows XP CD to work.
