Upgrading to a Celeron D

Looking to upgrade this old celeron 400mhz pc to a "Celeron D" - is pc2700 ram good enough for this use and can anyone recommend a nice mb to go with it.

Wanted to go P4, but only willing to spend $300 for cpu/mobo/512mb ram/case/fans and video card to get it up and running

Yes, the 2.4A will be better than the celeron D, because you can overclock it. Get something like this if you're serious about overclocking. Zalman, $26

thanks for the info, dont really care about overclocking, but then again, anything faster than this celeron 400 has to be a improvement

possibly, but i havent heard anything good about AMD, i might be way off here, but i heard amd's overheat a lot and arent as reliable in the long run as intel's are.

again, this is what i heard, dont know for sure, never had a amd

Ok, so what have you heard that was good about a Celeron D?

BTW those things you heard about AMD are either old news, exaggeration or FUD, but its probaly a mix of the three.

yeah... that was old school amd...

all the new amd stuff is top notch....

if you're going budget processor, i say go with the amd sempron as well... it's performance is better than that of the celeron D and cheaper

Yeah, AMD chips are no tougher to cool than Intel chips now. If you do go AMD, here's my suggestions:

Athlon XP 2500+- includes heatsink $96
Shuttle AN35N-Ultra $53
Mushkin PC3200 RAM SneakyStuff linked to $76

Total: $225 This would probably be noticeably faster than the P4 2.4A and run a bit cooler

You've been a member of this forum since June of 2000 and you've heard nothing good about AMD? Either that was a joke (not funny) or you've had your head in the sand for a long time.

AMD has you covered at all the possible price points you could be shopping for.

IF YOU GET A P4 (dont bother with celerons AT ALL) MAKE SURE U GET 2X256 OR 2X512MB RAM.................. P4 WITHOUT DUAL CHANNEL RAM SUCKS.

Megatomic and nick1985, just becuase i been on this board since 2000 doesnt mean i know everything about amd, one of my boxes is a celeron 400 -- its uptime has been nearly 100%. Most of my friends have p4's, not amd, so maybe i do have my head in the sand as you say.

Dont play games very much, so dont need anything high end (64-bit), the suggestions given here are well welcomed and i will go with one of them soon.

I think for general use the Celeron D isn't too bad.

But best performance for your budget will most certainly come from a Sempron 3100+

As you don't play any games you might want to settle for integrated graphics or even move you current graphics card across.

Choosing the Sempron over the Celeron will mean that you needn't worry about dual channel ram, there will be less penalty for having a smaller amount of cache than with the Intel.

Then again you are moving from a Celeron 400 so either way when its all set up you will be pleasantly surprised by the difference.

Its quite a bit better than the previous gen Celeron. Performance is now ~ the same as Athlon XP @ same speed rating. For example, Celeron D 2.8 ~= 2800+ performance @ similar price.

Celeron D's are better by a lot than there previous bros. However a Mobile 35 or 45 watt AMD barton with an NF7-S or a DFI NFII Ultra Infinity with some good ram wil beat the living crap out of it. It will run circles around it!!! Dont get a celeron, AMD is cheaper, cooler, and generally faster.... there is no point unless you buy for old name.

whao... 3.6Ghz! Great O/C! Mine won't budge past 3.2, I suspect its because the chip is have is old (packaged in january or soemthign)...

For all those considering a D, a model 325 or higher by all indications have better chance to overclocks compared to 320.
