i currently have a 4.0 setup. 2 front and 2 rear. now i have the option of adding in a centre and sub-woofer to get a 5.1 setup. if i add in a 2.1 instead will i get the centre speaker sound from both the speakers or will one not function at all.

is there a better solution to this problem?

Sure, just either use one of your rears as a center or one of your new "2.1" satellties as a center. You have a toss one of the satellites unless you want mirrored output.

It depends on how you hook up the connections. If you split the center connection to two speakers, you could have a 5 1/2 . 1 setup (two speakers functioning as center, with the rest being normal.) it should work fine.

That's puts quite a bit more stress on the amplifier. It would still be a 5.1 setup however. 5 refers to discrete channels of sound information.
