Upgrading to 64

Recently my system has conked out and what better reason to upgrade (which I was looking to do in the future anyhow)

Currently it is a Asus A7V8X / amd 2500 barton / Ati 9500pro (eep🙁 )

I need to replace the mobo, not sure on the cpu (as i lack thermal paste at the time of writing) so I will leave it attached for now.

I was thinking of getting a low end A64., around 3000 or 3200 range.

What is the difference between the 939 and 754 sockets?
There a good reliable basic mobo with AGP support out there, or a guide on basic 754 / 939 boards?

I know the vid card will be a bottle neck, but ill get around upgrading that in time, I just want to get my system back running in the meanwhile. (I also only have 1gb 333ddr ram atm)

A worry I have is will my Antec Tru380 watt be able to handle these upgrades?

you could just get a socket 939 mb for cheap with an agp slot and buy, like you said, either the 3000 or 3200. there's only a 50$ difference between those two. i can't personally recommend a board, but if you do a little research it should be hard i would think.

If you're on a tight budget, I recommend socket 754. I'm going to get an Epox EP-8KDA3J motherboard & a Sempron 64 2800+ for $144 shipped. Supposedly that CPU overclocks on stock cooling to 2.1-2.2 GHz. Let's hope the rumors are true!

My biggest concern however is if my psu is compatable / enough for a low end a64 system.

a true 380 is more than enough. Also, check out the motherboard in my Sig, it may be right up your alley
