Upgrading to 2gig ram

Hello,

I am currently running an AMD64 system on an Abit AV8 with 1gig of corsair ram in dual channel and I wanted to upgrade to 2gig for gaming and future. I was wondering if I had 4 sticks of 512 of same exact memory, then would they be running in dual channel, would I notice a performance boost in multitasking or counter strike:source? If I decided to go withMushkin Dual Pack for my second gig of ram, would my 4 total sticks of ram still run in dual channel and better than if I went with 4 sticks of the corsair type. Or maybe should I go with Geil Dual Channel for my second gig instead of the previously mentioned other two?

If you're just gaming, you need no more than 1GB of RAM today; maybe a little more if you do heavy MMORPGs.

you dont need 2 gigs for gaming... 1Gig is great for gaming... 2gigs is good for video editing, and 4 gigs is for worthless pieces of crap who can spend a ton of money and dont care... what is funny is that on Alien ware they say what parts are recommended and they say 4 gigs is recommended... well anyway you should get 2 gigs if you have the money i guess but it is completely unnecissary... thats just my opinion

Yeah, more than a GB is a waste if you're not doing something like:

CAD
Professional Graphics (i.e. Photoshop with 6+ Mega pixel photos)
Video Editing (big DV/HD projects)
3d Animation, compositing (Combustion, Maya, etc)

Edit: Rami7007 beat me to it.

But my question is which of the three should I get for best performance if I currently have one gig of the Corsair brand

I'm going for 2GB with tax return money. Too many people have 1GB now, bragging rights have decreased.

Whhhhhhhhat.

I agree 2 may be overkill.

There are quite a few games that pull damn near a gig if not more.

I think slowly 1.5 will become the GAMERS standard.

I do also agree 4GB is absolute BS.

And Slash WTH are you talking about..

I tried the 2 gigs 92 i gig sticks) and pretty much there is no difference in games from 1 to 2 gigs.

I agree.

But slowly you can see trend heading that way..

If you upgrade your pc often, then yes I agree, 2 gigs is worthless NOW. But for me, I tend to not upgrade any single component in my rig and just rebuild a new one every 2-3 years (excluding gfx cards). When I built my current rig, everyone was saying how much of an overkill 1 GB was, and boy am I glad I didn't listen to them since now 1 GB is pretty much a requirement for smooth gaming.

So, my opinion is that if you don't want to really mess around with your rig once you've built it, get a 1.5 or 2 GB since it will become standard in say probably another 1.5 to 2 years time (maybe sooner). And don't forget that you want to be able to run them in dual channel, so get 2 sticks NOT 4x512 MB since that will slow your RAM down to DDR 333.

You should check the motherboard manual. Most NF3 boards can take 4x 512MB, but unless they're single-sided memory sticks, the memory controller forces them to run at 333FSB. I don't know if you'll be able to force the board to run at 400 in such a situation. I've seen some people saying yes, some say no they can't. I have been unable to find any 512MB single-sided memory sticks, personally.

Abit's website only lists one 1GB module as being compatible (Kingson K4H510838B-TCCC, so just popping in any old 1GB module is a risk. Unless you have access to several brands and you can try them out (Sure wish I did, as I'd like 2GB too, had to settle for 1GB).

LOL that's what you gimps were saying just last year... that 512mb was more than enough. 1GB is the standard now IMO, and 2GB is the sweet spot.

Yah, the coolness factor of having a gig has definitely worn off. In order to remain leet, at least 1.5 gigs is recommended.
Honestly though, I was playing SWG for a while, and even with 1gb of memory, when I would log 2 characters on, I was wishing I had some more, so 1.5 is not just for being leet

1.5 gig will just make you look like a lamer. 2 x 512 + 2 x 256? I believe that matching sizes give you the best results. 512 x 4 is what I will be getting. More OCZ for me.

I had thought about going with 2 gigs on my new NEO2 but the more sticks you have the less of an overclock you can get and I'v read you can't use timings as tight as you would for just 512MBx2.

Plus, some games and apps run worse with 2gigs over just 1.

1gb is more than enough for everything, except video editing and working with big pictures in graphic editing programs like photoshop/fireworks
