I have an 8800gts 320 with a e6400 at 2.8ghz
I want to upgrade, but I am trying to decide.. spend $200 on a q9550 or grab a 4890. I game at 1440x900 right now, but will upgrade the monitor early next year.
is the processor upgrade going to make any noticeable diff? or should I just pop in the video.. or should I wait until I can get my hands on a resonably priced next gen vid card and put in the q9550. Or should I do neither and wait until I can do a full mobo, proc, ram and video swap after taxes come back.

Just about an Dual core CPU running at 2GHz or better is plenty for a gaming system. Its the video card that makes all the difference. Go for the new card.

I'd upgrade the video card also. A video card will plug into any new system that you build.

In fact that's what I did. Upgraded the X1900 on my 4800+ X2 system to 4890 then two weeks later replaced everything except the case power supply and video card.

NOTE - I did see an improvement with the 4890 in my 4800+ system, I was just tired of building family members better systems than I had so I upgraded the rest of my system. Now the 4800+ system has the X1900 back in it and it connected to the TV in the livingroom.
