upgrading the pc

thats really expensive for the graphics card though, i got my 6600GT for only 215 and the 6800 ultra is 200 bucks more here...
 
Stick with the 6800GT rather than the ultra, it's cheaper and the performance is about the same.
 
Just get the chapest RAM y9ou can find from a good brand. You should be able to save ~$20 there and lose no performance at all. Corsair doesn't work well witht eh DFi though. Also just get a 6800GT or even an X800XL. The X800XL performs similair to the 6800GT, but is $100 cheaper.

Also I would just get an XP-90 with this. it wouldn't work well with overclocking, but since you are not you don;t have to worry. it would be extremely quiet though @ 14 dBA.
 
I see you chose the Zalman. Is this because you are looking for a quiet cooler? If so I would recommend just getting an Xp-90 w/ a quiet fan. I alos would just get the 6800GT as you can easily OC it to Ultra speeds anyway. You may also want to consider an X800Xl as I stated above.
 
well, quiet is good, but i mostly chose the zalman because it was in stock hehe, the xp-120 and -90 are not
i've been looking at the x800xl, but i dont know if i want to go that low
i have 2000 set aside for this upgrade and would like to get the most out of it
i may end up getting a new case too
 
um, dont quote me, but i swear the nvidia GTX is for sale for like $589 on pricewatch. why not buy that?

also if you are an overclocker, why not get the 3000/3200 venice and overclock it.
 
ohh i was looking at the money and thinking "holy crap you are getting ripped off" but since its canadian -_-

in reference to your cpu, the 3200+ venice core is exceptional for overclocking, thats what im getting in my upgrade today

and oh yeah, get the eVGA 6800 GT, you can later use the step-up program if you want to get a 7800 !

That low?? Both cards perform almost identical yet the X800Xl is cheaper. Who would not want to save money?

by this i mean lower than the 6800U, and the x800xl i'm looking at doesnt have gddr3 memory (asus) $400, hrmm dunno

i am not that much of an overclocker
i only overclocked my 2500 cause it was easy and i needed mmore power
3500 should be fine, besides, i dont want to spend more on ram and this ram isnt so much the overclocking type
 
if you arent overclocking, dont get the dfi lanparty. it is hard to set up, and made especially for overclockers. if you dont overclock, it will be a waste, and it will be hard to get to work. BUT, IMO you should get that board, and you SHOULD overclock. just an opinion. and if you do decide to overclock, get the 3200 venice. the 6800gt is good enough, and can be easily overclocked to ultra speeds. if the thermalrights come in stock, definately get them. they perform better than the zalmans.

im tired of hearing people say the dfi nf4 sucks for first time builders, and that it dos'tn work with corsair VS. I just did both today, and everything set up without a glitch.

i was in the same postion as you, OP and I want with the DFi. its an awesome board.

are there any other good options other than zalman i could go with if the xp-120 and -90 are not in stock?

i mean, if it's not too difficult i'll OC the 3500, but a couple questions:
-would the 3200 give better results?
-could the ram handle the OC at 1:1?

if so, should i opt for a 3200 venice and lower latency pc3200/3500 ram?
 
one thing to clear up: i do want to spend 2000 on this upgrade, so i want to get the best of the best of what i can in that price range
this is money that i've been saving especially for this upgrade, so it really isnt an issue of saving money, rather getting the most bang for my "allocated" buck

You don't need low latency RAM either. Cheap RAM will do just fine with a divider and it won't effect real world performance compared to a 1:1 ratio.

No. The max is 10x anyway. I am suggesting just running a divider. There is a sticky in the overclocking forum if you need help with overclocking.
